sure you get free food .... you can go wherever you want on the ship but a few places were off limits to us as we are crew and not passengers ...you play everyday , no there are no days off. we would play a "matinee" in the afternoon , and the main dance gig on the night in one of the Ballrooms . Also we would play for variuos artists , Singers that would turn up. Some of these would be very famous indeed, and they would have their arranger and the music so we would have a few minutes to look at that in the afternoon and play the gig as a backing band on the night.. In the rehearsal you don't play all the tune , just what we call "top and tail" which is the intro in and then stop ,, jump to the end ,,and finish ... the whole tune in 20 secs....at this point anyone can stick his hand up to request a bit if they think they need it .....
Like Start .....ok .....the end ...OK move on ,,, wait the guitarist wants something,,,,,
"yeah , I got a notated solo in the middle ...looks a bit tricky .."
OK play from from letter H for the crappy guitar player ///....right ...move on..
You only get one shot at it , if any ,,, everything had to be first time read off ,,, thats what I get paid for /.........
The pay was very good but also related to the country you came from ...with it being so International , therefore the Philipinos would get good money for being in the Phillpines , but that would be less than me comming from a more expensive country..
You would share a cabin in the depths of the ship somewhere , it was ok really .
the trip depends on your contract , mine was for a year .
I did short loops out of Southhampton to France , Portugal . the Med etc ...sometimes only a few days , then back to change passengers.
then It was 5 day trip to New york , and do loops out of there to Barbados , Carribean etc..then would come the world tour leave new york and not come back round south america , to new zealand , Australia Japan , Thailand all that , thn we would end in Japan and the japanese would rent it for a few months every year as a floating casino . We flew home , then start again next season..

Sometimes you can , I used to transfer in to a smaller lounge in the evening and play with a jazz quartet , then we just play what we ant or what we think is good , and a few requests ,,,, kinda background music to cocktails stuff ,,, or maybe a singer may turn up , I suppose you just never know what is next so you have to be prepared ....
I should dig out a photo of us there in one of the lounges ,,all dressed like James Bond for us on that cruise,,,,,

I was actually quite close to take a shot on this. Here in Hungary there's an agency that elects the aplicants on some prepared occasions where some guys from several ship companies are also invited so they can choose.
I've been present on an event like this, and it went like this:
Ok Whos' next? Ok play me your music, Ok another one....Ok, another one....Ok, I'd like to hear 'My way' (You've got let's say 3 minutes....Ok, what about ' Hotel California?' .....Some Michael Jackson.....Ok...
I've also heard about some guys just playing Their own stuff, but that's very rare.
Sure I know a couple of guy who did several rounds playing like that, and all got back very experienced....though it's very hard.
If You're well prepared for things like that it's sure a lot of fun.
Iwas invited 2 times to play in different kind of groups, one played almost just waltzes, the other would be some jazzy stuff...
As my little boy been born that time, I couldn't leave for 8 months...
Money went up from 1700 USD, and one could easily earn the same by tips, - room, food incl.
Things vary on when You've already finished a first 'round' (let say a 6-12 mnths time) Then You can get more money, ans shorter term contracts.
Maybe one in the US can get more money giggin locally, but in Hungary that's lot times more money than You could ever make in the country

hi
i am in the process of hustling a 2 week cruise in october/november this year
strangely enough they seem keen on a small flamenco group
2X dancers...2 x guitarist...singer.. and percussion..
call it nepotism but i know the organiser/agent..someone ive worked with for years...
they run 'themes' on these ships that cruise the pacific islands
so for instance the last one they did was a country music theme, previous one 50's rock and roll...more of a 'floorshow' performance
this one is a 'caberet' style theme...not sure how flamenco fits into that but it's their vision to include it...
best way is to find the agents/promoters for these cruises..
have a package ready to sell ...videos, audio, reviews and recommendations...
money doesn't seem overly 'lucrative' but considering the pro's seems a nice break from day to day stuff
also have the option of taking my daughter...
not sure it is of too much help as we are on opposite ends of the planet but imagine the process would be similiar..
as for a soloist...no idea..
last ship i did was intermission and background music for a puppet show...go figure

a practical man 
i dont know, i guess there's plus and minuses in everything depending how you see it...some like the idea of cruising around exotic locations of the world, playing music, getting paid....for free, sunny sky, beautiful women, drinking , partying, saving money ( if you chose too)
we don't know that the pay is necessarily gonna be crappy, depending on the agency or the cruise too, i mean Kiko says its not bad, AL says is nothing special on his deal, lets face it, in guitar or flamenco u don't get regular, full day, steady great pay every day so if you compare it to that...(congratulations for the trip btw AL its sounds great man)
also take aside the usual everyday living expenses, driving, petrol, food, snacks, extra bills it ads up when if you chose too you dont have to spend a cent but save it all
i don't now there's a couple of worst jobs out there i can think off

well first im saving my second semeser teaching money to go to spain in late septmber, liz is also planning to go depending on her health.......cant take much more time than 2 to 3 weeks
if the ship goes ahead it will be last week of october and into november
the cruise goes up the austraian coast ...across to new zealand then to french polynesia...vanuatu..fiji..new caledonia...
so almost local...
family type cruises...
all in time before the mayan apocalypse
did they count the leap years?
