For an additional learning resource to supplement the lessons I've been taking for three years in learning to play the flamenco guitar.

Great place to learn, and interact with people that enjoy flamenco.
To get P%$#@ O#$ at people that claim this is not the real thing because we do not have any Spaniards.
It seems to me I can learn a lot from people all over the world, not only about flamenco but also everyday stuff.

I joined to learn about Flamenco guitar, but stayed for the entertainment
listening to the fights. I really like popcorn.

Yeah, of course I like looking at Ander's boat pics as well, and I don't know
if he's on any other forums so I get my updates here.

Also it beats focusing on the work computer stuff, which I'm being paid
to do while I type this reply.

Two reasons.

1. Met Simon on Dimitri's flamenco site, which at the time (I felt anyway) was a bit like a flamenco facebook for the San Francisco area and felt a bit closed shop to extranjeros.
Simon was funny and disoriented the (mainly) U.S membership by coming across as the stereotype English gentleman with his Earl Gray tea and muffins etc, which made me laugh.
When Dimitri decided to pack it in after a hand injury and pull the plug, Simon came up with a refuge site called Flamenco Hangover, hosted by MSN where all the outcasts could keep in contact.
From there he started ForoFlamenco, which has developed over the years to be truly International in membership.
Simon asked me to moderate about 7 years ago while he was away, but I was reluctant as I felt I was definitely more of the type to need moderation rather than dispense it.
Anyway it was meant to be for two weeks only, but somehow I got stuck with the job.

2 When I was young I was completely fascinated by building shortwave radios and listening to english service broadcasts from far off lands.
I used to write to the stations and pick up QSL cards and had a large world map on my bedroom wall with stickpins indicating all the stations I had been in contact with.
I still get that same buzz out of being in contact with Flamenco enthusiasts from all over the world and love the motto over Broadcasting House, London....
"Nation shall speak unto Nation."

So that's it....oh, and I also learn/play a bit of Flamenco Guitar!

cheers,

Ron

I never heard you playing, you must be good by now assuming you started around the time the foro was made.

n85ae, Tomrocker and kudo, grácias amigos..you are too kind!

marduk, I prefer to use "made-up" or "cobbled-together" rather than "composed"!

I think it's just a mish-mash of odd stuff floating around in my head from bits and pieces I've heard...

cheers,

Ron

This site has been a great learning experience for me. I know quite a bit about flamenco after reading so many posts and listening to so much music. The most interesting thing is that everything I've learned here has really changed my perspective on the styles of music I thought I already knew so well.

You might want to mention that you took lessons from Paco Pena decades ago and lived in Spain for a time, too. I don't think some of the newer members know that.

Not formal lessons! I just met up with him informally some days while he was playing at a festival here. Seeing I was young and enthusiastic, he took pity on me and was kind enough to take the time to show me how to do some basic stuff.

cheers,

Ron

I am here because one day I hope to be able to play Flamenco

I am still waiting...

So now it is mainly lurking for entertainment.
