I just recieved my carved ebony Cejilla in the mail. The photos don't do it justice. It's way nicer and fits perfect!

By the way, I have compiled what I think is the most extensive glossary of flamenco terms -- available to anyone who wants it. It includes luthiery terms for anyone who wants to order a guitar in spanish. 28 pages of 9-point text with references, including entries on luthiers and guitarists. Just email me for a free copy. Or, if someone can figure out how to put it on the foro I could do that. It would be good if members could contribute to it.

Years of on-again-off-again effort. I wonder if the administrators of the foro would want to post it as a "top" article? Maybe it is too long for a post. . . I don't even know who to ask. My friend Bert Paxton had one — maybe still has — carved in the shape of… how shall I put this… male and female parts. Used to cause much expostulation when he played in restaurants & pubs.

Bert is on the right (though this might not be the cejilla in question). On the left is Mick 'Ginger' Coniam. Two of my mentors when I was a schoolboy.

An ebony cejilla with an angled/offset peg and shaped body for those first-fret chords.

No, those are the combo that Sabicas used to use: Savarez high tension (red card) bass and LaBella gold. The combination costs a little less than $10 per set. I am impressed with Hannabachs, though. Similar sound, but for more $.

The downside of the Savarez/laBella combo is that they only last 2 weeks max.

Got my carved cejilla from Tony today. It only took two days to get from FL to Las Vegas, wow! Once you start using one of these, you'll never go back. Its just one of those things that you can't explain. The heck with capos I say. A-1 craftsmanship and service from Tony. He's not just great at carving cejillas, he's also a hell of a flamenco ambassador and a treasure to our community. And I still swear that a guitar sounds better with a cejilla than with a capo... Tony is just flat out an artist with these things, and that's a fact!

Cejilla is the Spanish word for capo. Tony makes traditional cejillas. There are some Dunlop cejillas sold on this site:

Cejilla is Spanish for "eyebrow". From the shape. Like an eyebrow? I don't know if the Spanish would call a Dunlop a cejilla. They might think "capo" is American for "cejilla mechanica." Although it's actually Italian for "head". Jeez, this is getting complicated.

I was once stopped at the airport in Madrid. They found a dunlop capo with the x-rax. The girls didn´t understand what it was for. I told her its a capo...a cejilla... for the guitar... When I demonstrated it on some of my fingers how to put that..she finally let me pass. So...a normal Spaniard probably wouldnt understand cejilla. Or she was just not from this world.

it comes from that word , in Spanish Eyebrow is "ceja " that was originaly used to describe the "Trastes " or frets . That were also curved , but yes it came from old italian , Latin , I suppose , something to with the head , and then Im lost in history ,
But the other word that is not used much is Capodastro , and that is where the "Capo " word comes from.
I remember talking about this a long time ago in a music school in Cordoba

The Harvard Dictionary of Music says capodastro is a corruption of capotasto (It.), meaning "head of the fingerboard". Learn something every day.

capodastro was just another word in Spanish for the same thing in Italian it probably is capotasto although if it were my guess I would say that it is ( was ) two words Capo Tastro , but I will not argue with Harvard...
I also found this , that you possibly already know ...

Español: cejilla o capodastro
Portugués: capo o capotasto
Inglés: capo o capotasto
Holandés: capo , capodastro o capotasto
Alemán: Kapodaster
Francés: Capodastre
