PARRILLA UPDATE

I spoke to the bank this morning to find a more economical way of
contributing to the benefit for Manuel Parrilla. Apparently a transfer
directly to the account that was set up in his daughter's name is
prohibitively costly from the US.

Anyone wishing to make a small (or large) contribution should send a
personal or bank check for the desired amount (10 euros, about $15-$20 is
the recomended minimum donation), preferrably (but not necessarily) by
registered mail, to the following address which is the actual bank in Jerez:

Caja San Fernando
C. Porvera, 16
11403 Jerez de la Frontera
(Cádiz) Spain

In the "Pay to" portion, write the following:

" Cuenta Homenaje a Parrilla " no. 2071 12 57 140175286038

I personally guarantee the authenticity of the account. Parrilla has been
told that admirers from abroad have expressed interest in contributing...it
would be nice to make a good showing, the man needs all the support he can
get.

Hi Estela,
It might be worth asking the bank how much they charge to process a foreign check....my bank has a minimum fee of £12 (UK pounds), and then a commision on the exchange rate.
Banks aren't wealthy for no good reason.
Why bother going to the expense of a bank transfer, when simply writing a check and sending it on to the recipient would be just as good?
I'm sure they would be happy to process a $20 check and then charge $18 for doing so.
Then in a few month's time when the scandal hits the media in Jerez, claim that this is their normal charge and it's not their fault if nobody bothered to ask beforehand!
For the bank was being "honest, legal and truthful" by saying that it would be cheaper to send a check rather than a bank transfer, because for a bank transfer it's the sender who has to pay, whereas for a check it's the recipient who pays the costs.

I certainly don't want to put anybody off donating, but considering some of my experiences with foreign checks in different currencies, it may be a good idea just to check this out.

Ron, you're right, banks here usually take a big commission to cash any check, and there's a standard European Community charge for bringing in foreign currency.

This morning they explained to me that there's no way to avoid the exchange fee, but they agreed to waive their commission...I don't think there's any cheaper way to do it. The exchange fee isn't that much...something like 4%...that means from a $20 check, Parrilla would actually receive $19.20. I considered asking the municipal government if they would be willing to meet the exchange fee, but they're already paying for the use of the bullring and other infrastructural matters.

Tomorrow is going to be incredible, completely unprecedented. What's amazing is that so many big stars are willing to give up a Saturday night in the dead of June.

That's incredible that you would have the nerve to push it to the limit!
Jeez, 80 cents...and I would probably have negociated around the $3 to $5 mark myself!
You know in Scottish politics, it's always the women who stand up and fight about all the crap legislation/business practices/PC bullsh*t we have to endure.
