Rumba - Love and Liberte - Compas?

OK, I am just getting into this Rumba, it is cool and very lyrical. Thanks to Ramzi for his video's on this rumba.

Anyways, what do you think of this guys solo interpretation? I like it a lot.

What I find interesting is he often will end a phrase on the "two" beat, not the "one" beat. Like at the beginning after the free time intro that was discussed regarding this rumba recently.... What do you think of that?

PS If you count in fours you will notice a half compas around 35 seconds into the vid.

Anyways, ending a phrase on the two like he has, is that still a rumba feel or has he strayed off the rumba root... the GK don't do it here.

That's a great idea! Maybe put a really long trémolo right afterwards...

I prefer the actual version of this tune rather than the solo interpretation.

About compas - frankly when it comes to rumbas, I don't count. I just do what feels right. I didn't like this solo interpretation much because I felt instead of it being variations in compas that were being done, it was rather lapses in timing as compared to the original. Maybe if someone has not heard the original, they might find it works the way it was interpreted here.

I am not an expert, but I consider the compas in such rumbas to be not super-important to follow because there aren't well-defined structures that must be adhered to. If I remember correctly, this rumba's accompanying chords are numerous, and some are played for four beats, while others are played for two (not 100% sure because I haven't played this in a while). The way I think of "compas" in such rumbas is that you play the accompanying chords for the right number of beats. Anything else being done within those limits I find works fine.

It would be a good idea to get the opinions of others here on this matter though, Cathulu, as this is only how I think / deal with such rumbas, and it might not be the best way to go about things.

I hope this helps...

Cheers!

pretty amature to me. There is a better way to do it solo, but this stuff really needs backing.

OK, agreed it is amateur in parts, but that appeals to me as I am also amateur. Indeed I am worse than the chap on the video but I was going to try and use some of the ideas!

Anyways, what do you think of this one? It is nice but classical to me. Lots of arpeggios and no flamenco strumming. At least the other amateur guy had a few rumba strums.

Hey Ricardo, I would love to see you upload a little solo guitar bit of this rumba - how would you interpret it for solo guitar? You are a rumbero still no - at least a little bit? Or link to a better way to play it like you mention. When I have some time I will upload a small part with my crappy playing.
