Technical question about Miguel Ange...

I had this DVD for a while now, plays fine in my DVD player. But I recently sold it. Wanting to play it via my Macbook, but turns out I cannot...it is not even recognized. I suspect it is a copy protection measure but want to confirm it is like this for others too? I find it unbelievable we already pay 70 EUR for these and now even as a honest customer I cannot use it.

I don't have the Miguel Angel Cortes DVD but I have others from the Encuentro series and they all play on my Mac.

Yes the old ones do. But it seemed like Encuentro would have adapted to a new copy protection measure because this thing where the DVDs play on DVD Players, but not computers also seems present on mainstream DVDs recently (from what I could gather). Plus, I tried the Macbook DVD drive as well as an external one - both no luck.

So either my disc is screwed in a really odd way or it is intentional. Which is what I wanna find out.

I don't understand .... You say you sold it and then you complain about not being able to play it???

So obviously you are trying to play a ripped copy that you made of the original correct?
In which case some of the newer copy protection will stop playback.

i dont think its wrong to do a backup of a dvd as long as you dont put it up on the internet.
i've done it with many dvd's i have for martial arts and guitar, simply because i dont think i should have to pay more for a product i already bought once. there are alot of dvd decrypters out there, any dvd code can be broken by most of them.

Huh? No, I sold the DVD Player that I played it on before, not the DVD. Just realized that was not entirely clear in my original post.

In any case, I contacted Encuentro and they said I should be able to play it fine on my Macbook. But like I wrote before, it was not recognized neither by the internal Macbook drive nor an external one. But since I was able to play it before on the DVD Player, my copy is not considered "defective" and they will not offer to exchange it for free. So now I am stuck with this disc that I cannot play.

Well if its the original then it has to be a defective disc, there is no other explanation.

Sorry to hear about the crap customer service from Encuentro. Though I am not surprised, flamenco-world is even worse.
In Spain there is no such thing as "customer service".

you can use a program called handbrake to rip the dvd into mp4 format and you can play that file on your mac.. saves wear n tear to the disc and the disc drive.

cheers

Encuentro is Switzerland based.

With buying any "copieable" intellectual good you should get a license to watch it. You should get a free copy if the disc is destroyed or when you lost it. IMO. The costs for the companies would be minimal and the legal issues would have been solved very easily. No hassle with thoughts about possibly illegal copies would be the result...

do you have access to a friend's/work computer?
it'll take anywhere from 20 mins to 50 mins to encode it to mp4 format,
then you can copy it to your mac..

I have yet to try it on someone else's computer, I will do that soon. But like I said I had already borrowed an external DVD drive from someone, with which it did not work either, so either it's OSX that cannot deal with my disc (which according to Encuentro should not be the case) or the disc is defective.

try it on a PC and see if it works.
and try it on another MAC, if it works on PCs and the other MAC, then you know it's your MAC that is having the issue, if it doensn't work on other MACs, and work on PCs, then it's Encuentro's way of making the discs issue.
if it doesn't work on PCs or MACs, then it's the particular disc's issue.

cheers mate.
