The best metronome?

Hello Flamenco Lovers,

What is the best metronome if you are concerned about keeping your falseta in time if you play the guitar? I have these options now

1 Oscar Herrero Flamenco Metronome
2 Flamenco Metronome
3 A app for iphone, ipod touch like Beat Vibe or ZuloLabs
4 Or a app for Ipad like graf-martinez cajon loops for garageband ipad
5 ??? (someting else)

I don't have a Iphone, Ipod or Ipad at this moment but the Oscar Herrero Flamenco Metronome is about 300 euro in the netherlands and the Ipod touch 4 8gb is around 150 euro and ipad2 16 gb 450 euro. I want to take it with me that is importent for me! What is the best choise? Let me know your best options!

Greetings Mike

RE: The best metronome? (in reply to Mike

I have the beatvibe on my iTouch

I use it almost everyday when practicing falsetas.

Pro: Very easy to use. There are many variations of loops you can play around with.
Con: If you are planning to use it as a gig or something along that line, it may suit you well--it sounds very static and monotone. But as a purpose of practicing, I think it it does very well job

If you cant afford an iTouch, what you can do is download those solo compas track, and if you can find a slow downer program, you can speed up or slow down the tracks--that will give you the freedom to tweek the tempo

Hope this helps!

I have the Oscar Herrero Flamenco Metronome and like it very much. It has various palos, and one can set the speed. And I like the rotating lights on the face that keep pace with the beat. It is expensive, but in my opinion, over the long haul, it is worth the cost.

Cheers,

Bill

I use Oscar Herrero's Metrónomo Flamenco but I like
Graf-Martinez' Compas Pro
too (it's less fancy and good for straightforward palos)

RE: The best metronome? (in reply to Mike

i also have the oscar herrero metronome...
works well, good sounds... and tend to use it with my pc mainly...( though tricky to program at first and the interface is is'nt easy to work out....plus no practical battery life so not very portable]
BUT
the beatvibe for iphone seems to be the one i use and programme the most...HIGHLY recommend this app for it's simplicity and versatility...plus the online sharing is pretty cool...use it daily for practice...
in hindsight i would have saved the money and use beat vibe and not bother with the OHFM...my i phone came later

Jason's 'dr compass' should be released shortly...a week or two?
great sounds...improvises etc...the online version looks great..
with i phone apps stick with BEATVIBE...i have a few others and they just are'nt as good or practical to use...runtime errors...[had similiar problems with the earlier graf martinez 'clock' but have'nt seen the PRO version]

thanks for the link on garageflamenco...

Hi AlVal,

I think you have the oscar herrero metronome MFOHv2 with the usb stick. OSCAR HERRERO FLAMENCO METRONOME USB
This is the one I was talking about because I want to take it with me to pratice outside. OSCAR HERRERO FLAMENCO METRONOME
Am I correct?!

The most important item is that i can practice every where with the metronome!

And everybody thanks for the comments. I really like it

Greetings Mike

Make phone calls?? If you have a iphone....
But i don't have a Iphone, Ipad or Itouch yet.
I just went out to the shop to look for the iphone, ipad and ipod Touch.
And i find the ipad very nice, think i buy the ipad (big screen and portable) so i can try:

1 A app for iphone, ipad, ipod touch Beat Vibe and ZuloLabs
2 Or a app for Ipad graf-martinez cajon loops for garageband ipad
3 Doctor Compas when it comes in the App store

And with the ipad you have garageband and you don't have this fot the iphone an ipod touch, if i am correct?!

way to go.... definitely...ipad a better option unless you need a phone.
also the 'i hear it' app is a version of transcribe...slows down mp3's without pitchchange with minimal audio quality loss...creates loop etc...good also to vari speed solo compas etc...
also guitar pro app
and an apple version of sibelius....
zulu labs not so great in comparison to BV imho...

as much as i dislike controlling corporations apple have a small part of soul....designed for musicians....

let us know how it all works out Mike. hope it was of some help.

Graf-Martinez’ GarageCajonLoops is neither a metronome or an app, but templates for the recording studio software Garageband for iPad with implemented cajon and palmas loops.

RE: The best metronome? (in reply to Mike

recommendation please?

I need to buy a new metronome because my mechanical one is no longer reliable. I want a digital one which has a good sound, many have a horrible bleep noise.
I don't need it to do anything special just tick, which I can change in one step increments rather than the traditional pedulum increments.

I had a look at the Korg KDM2, it's expensive but is also loud and could be used to settle arguments with unruly dancers!

xirdneH_imiJ yours sounds good what is it?

http://www.metronomes.net/Intelli_IMT-301_Metronome_Tuner.htm
had one for years. not sure it's the best but have'nt heard a better or louder one.
can cut through three guitars rehearsing.
has a warm woody tone to it. but like all the 'beeps' are standard...
the auto scoll thing is quick.
but has no TAP function.
everyone comments how good it sounds. and loud.
has semi quaver and triplet subivisions with rests so good for syncopation practice..
plus tuner. hygrometer. input/2x output.
about third of the size of a standard novel.
good product.

While I agree that any of these fancy metronomes sound fun and useful, especially this new doctor compas thing that "improvises" patterns while you practice, I have to strongly point out that these types of "helpful" metronomes don't really help you get solid time necessarily better then a simple click. In fact it is more useful to only have the click to work with if you know the issue you have is learning time better.

After you already have solid time, these fancier devices can work to help with improvisation or composition or just keeping in check, and have fun doing it. But they can also cause damage to early level students who don't keep good time yet. My drummer friends warned against them and called em "potty trainers" as you can get stuck relying on these things helping with accents and off beats vs feeling it yourself.

If you do not yet have solid time, here is a perfect example of how one needs to work with a metronome, even for flamenco.

I am selling my Oscar Herrero Metronome

me too though can't even give it away since Dr Compass released....
for any one interested in australia or region....going cheap!
makes a great paperwieght or door stopper....

good advice here
think standard metronomes are a must when learning new material
after that work on groove with compas based loops etc
find that in the real world theres no flashing 1 to 12....just feet
but dr compas is awesome....

I used my mp3 player for practicing because like you i cant stand the beep sound, and secondly i dont really see the reason why i should spend money on something which only makes click. So i extracted a clap sound from a recording and made my own loops out of them, just a simple clap at different speeds. On top of that i of course copied some solo compas loops which are cool to jam with and inevitable if you want to check if something is in compas.
Metronomes are for the butt*. Just use your mp3 player and be a little intelligent You dont even need an mp3 player, can also use your phone.

*) except the Doc of course which combines good sound and portability. I was only referring to beep metronomes with unbearable sound.

Just be careful of loops that are not spot on. I have encountered even commercially available ones in the solo compas series etc, not useable. And shorter loops are safer so you don't come out all square payoish with your sense of compas.
