Jeff Sigurdson Flamenca Negra

Flamenca negra #415 by Jeff Sigurdson
Nine months after joining his waiting list, I just received my new guitar! It really blew my expectations and I am willing to post a review of it.
Features :
• European Spruce Top
• East Indian Rosewood Back and Sides
• Spanish Cedar neck
• 45 degrees headstock angle.
• 12-holes tie block
• Gotoh Tuners
• 660mm Scale
• French Polished
• Came with a TKL Archtop case
Action, Fit & Finish :
• The polish is almost perfect. It could have been a little better around the fingerboard where it meets the top but everything else is perfect.
• The action is awesome. Low, no buzzing except when pushed hard. It’s really easy to play and it’s as good as any high end guitars I tried at José Luis Postigo’s shop in Sevilla. It’s really fun to play.
• Everything seems to be well done. The neck joint seems perfect. No glue squeezes anywhere. Perfect neck and fingerboard.
• It’s very lightly built. It feels fragile but I’m sure it isn’t... maybe I’m just too caring because I just got it.
Sound Quality :
• When I got the guitar, the first thing I noticed was its power, especially from the bass strings. I thought they were overpowering the trebles and I didn’t really like that because my arpeggios sounded uneven. After a few hours of playing, the trebles opened up and now it’s very well balanced.
• Everything sounds bright and clear. The sustain is good. VERY percussive and rich tone. I love its pulse!
• It sounds better than a Felipe Conde FC25 and the Hermanos Sanchis Lopez 1F model I tried at Postigo’s shop. I can’t wait to see how it will turn out as I play it more often.
Realibility/Durability :
• I can’t say anything about that right now. It’s brand new and it looks very well constructed. I’ve never heard of anyone complaining about Sigurdson’s guitars though.
Customer Support :
• Even though Jeff isn’t a computer guy and replies only very briefly to my emails (straight to the point), he’s always been reliable and has answered all my questions.
Other Comments :
• For the price I paid (2000$CAD + shipping), it’s just plain steal. I had high expectations, maybe too high considering the price range. I was so excited that I had a hard time falling asleep the night before, but the guitar meets them all in every aspect. Definitely a big step up from my homemade blanca.
• I’ve never had the chance to try a Francisco Navarro or a Salvador Castillo guitar, but anyone looking to buy a guitar in this price range should really consider Jeff’s guitars. I highly recommend him and his guitars!

Beautiful! Really happy for you I was so impressed with the student model I had, I'm not surprised to hear you love this. And it sounds quite good for being so new! I believe Jeff uses a Reyes style design on these, no?

Nice Negra
What a coincidence. I got my new Blanca from Jeff yesterday. I live within a few hours traveling distance of his shop so I picked it up myself. I am not disappointed. Jeff produced exactly what I had asked for. The top looks exactly like your negra. Same specs (rosette, scale length, tie block, polish etc.) The difference is my top is Englemann spruce with Alaska cypress back and sides. The back and sides are the same colour as the top.
Haven't played it much yet but so far I agree with your assessment. It is comfortable and easier to play than my other two. The sound is pure with no strange voices creeping in and just the right amount of buzz in rasqueado.
By the way, nice playing in your audio sample.

Congratulations!! I personally would not completely trust Jeff's guitar. I have tried 2 of his guitars, they are awesome for the price. I really loved his guitars, that I wanted to get one from him, but I was turned down when I learned that he made 2 defective guitars to my teacher and my friend. both of them ended up sending it back to him. he fixed one of them and when it came back, it didnt sound as sweet as it used to. thats the only reason I dont completely trust jeff's guitars.

Obviously there is always a risk involved in buying before trying... I took the bet considering most reviews I had found and the amazing price. I didn't have much choice anyways... the nearest shop with a good inventory of guitars is a 10 hour drive from where I live.

Also, my guitar being #415... I bet there are a few duds around like any other luthier in the world.

I'm not sure. I thought it was based on Barbero's, but I'll try to find out by placing a flashlight in it tomorow.

Ahmad - I'm quite sure Jeff would make you anything you want. I've seen one BRW classical from him, but haven't seen a negra. I think his waiting list is around 9-12 months now.

DoctorX2k2's comment about Jeff's email style is dead on - he gets straight to the point and writes very short messages. I get the impression he spends most of his time in the shop as opposed to in front of the computer If you have a lot of questions it would be better to call him on the phone.

Thanks,

Congratulations.

I have a student model from Jeff as well and I love this guitar.
One day I'll afford a Sigurdson blanca (when I get more time to play) as a second guitar.
