I'll certainly be doing a review of mine, ...

I´d love to read that, and see how you find it in comparison to extremely expensive guitars like the Laskin.
( Waiting for the review, while prepared for a nice surprise.)

RE: Stephen Faulk Guitars- Five blan... (in reply to Ruphus

Hey Ruphus - to be fair, I never did play that Laskin flamenco although I did covet it based on my experience with two of his guitars back in 2001.

Coming from a 17 year background of mainly steel string fingerstyle, I'm still very much a newbie when it comes to flamenco. However, I have bought and sold a few in the past year or so and have learned a lot about what I like in a flamenco guitar. So, I will of course be able to offer some insight but nothing close to someone like Jason who is able to fully dominate and test a guitar to it's limits. I think it will be interesting for Stephen to have a range of reviews and video/audio from a few different types of players.

RE: Stephen Faulk Guitars- Five blan... (in reply to Ruphus

In my humble experience buying Flamenco guitars, I have come across the question of price vs. value many times. Is a more expensive guitar guaranteed to sound or play better? What does sounding better mean? If you can't play the guitar before buying it (b/c it hasn't been made, for example), how do you know that it will be easy to play?

We usually use aids such as sound samples, expert advice, specifications (1A vs 2A), reputation (previously-made guitars and celebrities who play them), ...etc., to evaluate what guitar to buy to get the best price-to-value ratio. However, the ultimate test is to play the guitar. I've heard multiple horror stories about guitars that sound awful though they are expensive and some relatively cheap guitars that sound amazing. One caveat is that, within limits, different guitars will appeal to different tastes.

Having said that, guitar pricing seems to be very subjective. I think Stephen spoke about this point quite eloquently. I salute him for giving people the option to return the guitar if it doesn't suit them. I think this adds credibility to his work.

The main point I wanted to make is that the question about price is *legitimate* and anyone selling anything *should* have an answer to it! I know I have an answer in my own business. However, the answer will not be a simple "it has feature X, therefore, it costs more".

Hey Ryan,

You seem an accurate and honest character.
( Looks like Canada was an oasis of good old upright terms anyway.)

Affect,

So true what you say about questions on prices.
I used to have a bunch of vivid disputes in forums for recording gear and classical guitars with people who thought things where worth whatever one could get for them, which is quite a senseless and distorted philosophy.

Meanwhile it seems as if this sort of "legitimated" claim digging mentality was gradually / finally fading from common sense.

Stephen´s offer in contrast appears to be a deal of fairness.
For one with the return policy, as you mentioned; secondly for the valuable equivalent offered.

At that price you normally expect serial production student guitars that will rarely provide the personality handmade instruments have. And with sight on read user feedback I suppose that there will be quite some bang for the buck happening.

- And that blanca eye candy I saw on a photo was so damn tempting ...
( Sometimes it appears as if optics could tell you something in advance [ that´s at least how it has occured to me more than once in music stores ], and that beautiful guitar blonde looked like a vibrating paint to me.)

If I hadn´t too many guitars already ( and on top those headaches with transport from USA over Europe to here ), me would certainly be on the waiting list now.

The abstinence though has me no less curious about Stephen´s luthiery, and I am really looking forward to fellow´s reviews and clips.

Hey here is that rosette on an actual guitar! Three more to go after I finish this one. Some binding next. I'm getting excited to hear this one, it's narrow waisted and has a drawn in upper bout with a flattish bottom; antique looking in the sense that it's like more like a 19th century plantilla shape.

I'm using a book matched Walnut headstock veneer. Its has a bit of figure and with finish on it it looks really fitting with the lighter tone of the Port Orford back and sides.

Hey Stephen!
Your rosette rule, man!
Not just this one, but in general Your rosettes are the best for my taste I've ever seen. It's simple, but colorful and elegant! bravo

Thank you Beno, lot's of other makers do beautiful rosettes and I love looking at old ones. I'm glad to know my direction towards simplicity is getting appreciated. I can make them as complicated any anyone, but honestly the complexity and little parts and patterns don't move me like a bigger bolder visual statement.

What is the purpose of the rosette?

Mainly an expressive design element, but it does in fact help with cracks around the edges the same way purfling on a violin works. A crack going with the grain gets stopped by the purfling material that runs perpendicular, mostly, to the grain. Rosettes are made of rows and rows of purflings set together in a circle.

The backing patches glued behind the rosette under the top also help with stabilization of the edges and potential cracking. And the upper and lower transverse bars above and below the rosette add to that non cracking stabilization as a byproduct of being what keeps the whole top from folding up towards the neck. The Torres based design is a marvel of good carpentry sense with so many parts working together and overlapping in purpose.

RE: Stephen Faulk Guitars- Five blan... (in reply to Ruphus

The last Port Orford guitar is ready for it's bridge and is going out to Wisconsin soon. I took the last order for this series and then thought that was it. They have all been very successful, everyone seems to be happy.

I'm willing to go it one more time as I think I have two or three sets of the aged Port Orford left and I was saving one to make a guitar for myself if I ever get back to playing. I'll put of some pictures of the one going out to Wisconsin...I will have to ask for $3400.00- a $100.00 dollar price raise in this series, not much over three years.

If anyone is interested in another Port Orford blanca please let me know if I can help you. I think they have only gotten better. Contacting me though the foro is ok but better to email me at my website ( below) . Foro email can get lost in the spam folder. Thanks.

Oh and BTW the waiting time is not that long right now, I've cleared the decks of all the orders and I'm set up well. I have a neck and top ready with a 660 scale set on them, but I can whip up other scales, it's about six weeks to get a 660 it right now as the guitar is half way built. I'll also build it as a Cypress blanca or Negra if you would like, but the cost will be a bit higher. It's just waiting to be built.

Really like the matching fretboard and headplate. Are they both IR? Or is the 'board a striped ebony and you selected a dark IR 'plate to match? Nice look-

And I definitely agree with the other comments on your rosettes - very tasteful, traditional and understated in the style of santos, esteso and barbero, yet modern in color scheme and detail. Super cool-

HH,
I have been using Macassar ebony for fret boards for about 6 months, before that I used both black ebony and Macassar. I have come to like the the figure in the Macassar better than the black fretboard, which looks kind of bleak to me now.

I'm thinking about working with a rosette palette of black white and color shaded grey next and going to more traditional formats. The traditional format would be black borders, herringbone, wide black field, and then regular mosaic tiles, but all done with greys and blacks. I'll still do the other rosettes on request, but I find I need to reinvent the rosettes and go back a forth between traditional and outside.

The Port Orford in the video was the first one I made a long time ago and it is owned by a guitarist in San Francisco. It's been taken for several years. The one I just strung up yesterday sounds even better.
