Paco Doble

Anybody remembers there is a vinyl record in the '70s called Paco Doble (Philips) by PDL and Paco Pena. I would love to have a standard music notation or a tab of Pena's last piece: Lauro's Danza Venezolana. Any internet shop where I can find one?

This is from Paco's second LP, with Los Maracuchos, now sunk without trace.

For a long time it was known as Venezuelan Waltz Nº 3, but then Lauro named them all, and I think this one was "Natalia", after his daughter.

If you're in the US you should be able to get it from Guitar Solo in San Francisco (gspguitar.com). It's in Lauro Volume 1 for $16.95. (The pieces used to be available separately, but I don't know if they still are any more.)

Hi Paul, this is vey helpful indeed. There are just so many vals and danzas by Lauro that I'm a bit lost. I'll try to get hold of one from Fretsonly. This is the record from which I discovered both Paco. Occasionally, I see one on eBay.

Looks like fretsonly.com has everything but Volume 1

I've been puzzled about this LP for years.

Do both Pacos actually play TOGETHER (live), as in a guitar duo....or is it simply that the LP contains tracks by both guitarists, but recorded separately?

I saw it for sale in the 80's but never got round to buying it.

Anyone any info?

This is not a flamenco record, something like Hispanoamerica. PDL plays on side 1 and Pena on side 2. I think Philips just put the two together because they play similar music and called Paco. I suspect Pena must have known PDL but PDL might not have heard of Pena at that time, I don't know. If you like PDL's other South American music, you should like this one.

Side 1: Amapola, Pajaro chogui, Yo vendo unos ojos negros, Guadalajara, (Yo todo) A media luz, Tico-tico, Quizas, quizas, quizas.

Side 2: La bamba, Caminando, Choros no.2, Ritmo orquidea, Carnival from "Black Orfeus", Valse criollo, Danza venezolana.

Well, I'm not called Paco, but I still smoke, so maybe there's still hope that some day I could make a record of some of my stuff and release it along with some of Paco de Lucia's and call the album "Dos Fumadores"?

I forgot to mention that Venezuelan Waltz Nº 3 was also known as Valse Criollo for a time, and was recorded under that name by several people.

I know Vals Criollo, it's a lot more difficult to remember that number!

The record number of Paco Doble is 9279 241, and the cassette number is 7259 241 by Philips (Holland). There is one in www.ebay.fr at the moment. The price is almost reasonable. The item number is 380254327805. The seller is away until the 10th April, but you can still order it.

Thanks for the number. I don't want to buy it, since I already have Carnival, and the Lucía stuff is moderately blah. But in my rôle as mild-mannered reporter for a guitar magazine, I often have to put discographies together, so this is useful.

You guys be busy with dismissing this album for it being a compilation; while to me it remains the best guitar venyl that I know of.

Instead of going through a dozen of albums of which each might have one or two ( or no ) pulling pieces ( with the rest to be appreciated for virtuosity or for an invented falseta or whatever, but not necessarily for rocking the hut ), I get a lot from this very release that is jammed with beautiful, pulling pieces one after the other.

To me this is the gem of Iberian guitar albums.

In fact I´d like to see a fellow enthusiast who owns it and actually knows it, yet stating like "it´s soso", only to wonder how frigid it can get.
All the same, be it for lack of perception or for strangely led knowledge. As it would seem to me.

From what I have written, I don't think I ever dismissed this album at all. In fact, I enjoy it a lot, compilation or not. It's one of my cherished LPs in my vinyl collection which has never been released in CD and mine is in excellent condition. This is also the only Paco Pena's record on South American music I know of apart from that one with Eduardo Falu.

Carnival was Paco’s 2nd album (Fontana LPS 16267), which was of South American music with the harp trio Los Maracuchos. You can see a photo of the cover in the discography on Paco’s website.

We don't allow or promote links to pirate sites offering Flamenco stuff here.

We WILL allow a link or upload of something that is no longer available though.

The "Paco Doble" album had been removed and was no longer available to download, so was irrelevant.

That site, however, was offering all sorts of currently available stuff for "free" (meaning in you pay THEM money they will deliver the illegal stuff without giving you hassle and bother), which is not fair to the decent Flamenco artists who are just trying to make a living and doing plenty good for lazy tossers who do nothing but stink in bed all day like pigs and try to make lots of money off the Internet and other people's work and effort.
