My photo of the week 14

This one is significant in that it is my first 120 colour film through the Rolleiflex and developed at home. I continue to explore my control over exposure and depth of field.

These are Argentinian tourists checking out a rough bar. I warned them off.

I like it. We are looking at them looking at something.
It has a real retro feel to it somehow. It looks like it was taken years ago...

Yep, the camera was made in 1956 and the film has a cinematic reputation. I am getting so close to the "look" I am seeking, I can almost touch it - the look you just commented on.

Here's another that perhaps backs that up.

Have you had anyone get annoyed at you for shooting them? I feel like I am imposing when I take pictures of strangers. It would take away the natural look to ask first.

It's a good question and one that street photographers discuss at great length.

Legally, in the UK, anyone in a public place can be photographed but their recognisable image cannot be used for commercial purposes like advertising, without their express permission.

Philosophically, once someone is aware of the camera they change their behaviour - this can work sometimes e.g. I would ask a bunch of Hell's Angels for permission, for my own safety :-)

Ethically, I would not take a photo of someone that demeaned them or diminished their dignity. I steer clear of the homeless, the disfigured, drug addicts etc.
