Sorry for the ignorance, but what are the benefits of a Composite string? Does it have a brighter sound? I always found that the G string sounded more dull and less resonant than the others if that makes sense?

RE: Daddario Composite G string (in reply to chrisva

Indeed the G string tends to be thick and unwound so it usually sounds tubby.

the composite G which I think is brown? grey? Tries to correct that.

I think many people swear by these Gs. They will use another brand completely, but the G will be the D'addario composite.

I am waiting for one now myself to try it out. D'addario strings to me in general are very high quality, but not raucous enough. Too clean!

That sounds like me. Besides, you dont need to change it. Last time I changed one, it was 2 years old, being played almost every day.

Ah Anders, you use these. That makes me more anxious to try them.

How many people use the composite G this way? I am waiting for one in the mail and I want to know what to expect.

Are they much thinner than a usual G?

If you have a well balanced guitar sound with a clean g string tone there is no need for these composite strings, they will make the g sound like steel. If your guitar doesn't respond well to the g string it can help. The guitar I am playing doesn't need support on the g string, but many other instruments, even expensive ones, seem to have issues with it.

Well, that was a very closeminded response . I use that G string because I like it!!!!! Not because its nescessary. I always ship my guitars with standard clear G strings because thats what most people like and because its a reference. The Daddario G string is just my personal preference. I like rattly steel sounding G strings. Besides, I like the feel of it because its thinner nad harder. It bends better. Standard G strings are very thick and I dont like picking between the 3rd and 4th string if its one of these thick nylon ones. But again, its just my personal preference. Most players actually prefer standard nylon....

RE: Daddario Composite G string (in reply to HolyEvil

Thanks for Ramirez... I got a composite G string and I have to say I like it VERY VERY much.
Not much different with the right hand, but the left hand feels a lot better, feels easier to fret compared to the fatter nylon G string..
The sound is slightly brighter as well compared to the nylon which, in comparison, sounded a little muffled.
Does it come in different tensions? cuz it feels slightly harder compared to the fatter nylon G string..
And does the squeak on the right hand goes away after breaking it in?
Do we have to stretch it when we put it on like all the other strings?

Thanks to Ramirez again.. and I'm gonna use the composite G on my guitars from now..
cheers

Well, that's a good example of how folk's preferences can change with time.

The EJ45 set comes with a standard G and a composite one.

Around the time I bought my Anders guitar he said, "I'm currently using EJ45s. I like the composite basses and the clear trebles. I just usually throw that ugly, brown composite G one away".

So actually I've never even tried one! I must have some lying around though.

I just buy sets of E+A+ 2Ds now so it's been ages since I bought a complete set, so I don't know if they still include the optional G.

Great life out of those strings.

cheers,

Ron

Tried out the new composite set yesterday, I really like it!
On my guitar the composite G string sounds much brighter, now just wait and see what it´s gonna sound like in a couple of days!

Oh yes. Sorry!

(I've edited my post in case folk get confused)

I only chucked it away because you did!

OK, I'll fish one out sometime and give it a go.

cheers,

Ron

I haven't been a big fan of this string, though have used it off and on. But this thread has got me wanting to try it again - maybe I missed something!?

So, I looked around and D'Addario has now released EJ25B and EJ25C Flamenco strings!

http://www.amazon.com/DAddario-EJ25C-Classical-Guitar-Strings/dp/B004J9CKN8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=musical-instruments&qid=1301405105&sr=1-1

Yes, composite strings, designed for Flamenco, with either black or clear trebles. Goodbye ugly G-string!

Bummer. A little more reading suggests the 25B and C sets have regular nylon trebles, and don't seem to come with a better looking composite 3rd. Hello again ugly G-string...

Looks like stringsbymail.com sells single composite 3rds. So you can pair them with whatever other set you normally like. Next time I order more Hannabach 827s, my particular favorite, I'm going to order a few of these to try with them:
