Andres Dominguez Guerrero

Hello all,

does anyone have any experience with Dominguez guitars? I know this builder has an incredible reputation, but I have heard three so-so reviews of his guitars in the last few months.

I hate to draw attention in this negative manner to his work, but I am curious. Has anyone tried one of his blancas? Obviously, all the sound clips I have heard are great, but I would like to hear it straight from the horse's mouth as it were because sound clips mean nothing.

They are bad guitars for the money he asks. I would buy one at 400 euro though.

If you decide to buy, first look at the guitar. He has guitars that have their necks bended (i only know the greek word for this), and he sells them. NEVER buy from him unless you see the guitar and like it. I think he could send you a broken guitar or something. Be careful.

Wow,

that is I think the fourth or fifth bad review. I don't want to destroy his reputation here, on the contrary, I love the look of his guitars and the sound clips I have heard, but for a man who makes less than 20 guitars a year... Any other reviews?

I bought one in past for 1000E from him personally in his workshop. It was an awful guitar. I sold it some month later. And it continously changed its owner later on.

It was a low priced guitar..but one of my actual guitars (Sanchis Carpio) also only costed 1000Euros but it is many levels above the Dominguez for the same price... I would always go for Carpio than for Dominguez if I would have a choice.

But could have been a coincidence.. who knows. Maybe you are lucky and get an awesome Dominguez for low money..

Doitsujin,

I was hoping to hear from you because I saw your comments in a search on the foro for Andres Dominguez. Your comments were so strong that I realized maybe I should reconsider searching out a Dominguez.

You see, I was offered a Dominguez for a not bad price, or at least I thought (3000$ US), but on the counsel of a friend who lives in Seville I decided to go for something else. I have always wondered if I made a mistake, and from what I have seen I probably dodged a bullet. Who knows, perhaps the guitar was the one you sold

naah.. can´t be. Because somebody did golpes with his whole fist on this guitar in the meanwhile..And the top is broken. But he was able to sell it for a reasonable price.. He must have serious business skills...

I owned a 1A Andres Dominguez cypress and spruce for 6 years and it played excellent and had a nice response and tone. I recently traded it to Don Soledad for the Glenn Canin I have for sale. When I bought the Dominguez I compared it to a Reyes Sr. and a Reyes Jr. and it was at least equal in tone and response to either one. Any differences would be a personal preference thing.

Here is my opinion. Dominguez is a bit overbuilt and way overpriced as are most Spanish made flamenco guitars. I base this on the fact that a superior flamenco in every way can be bought from several lesser known makers worldwide for $2500 to $3500.

It is a fallacy that a flamenco made by a Spanish maker in Spain is best.

It is also important to remember that a flamenco guitar cannot be judged by its maker, but must be judged by the player. A consensus might judge the guitar the worlds best, but if the player purchasing it finds it does not please them, then for them it is an inferior guitar.

After I received and played on my custom made to my liking Tsiorba flamenco guitar, I found the Dominguez to be less responsive, lacking as nice a bass growl or the trebles didn't sing as sweet as the Tsiorba and another factor was the playability of the Tsiorba beat the Dominguez hands down. I must say also that I have never played on a Conde, Reyes, Fernandez, Ramirez, or any other big name or unknown name flamenco that even came close to the Tsiorba especially in playability.

I would buy a used Dominguez for $3000 long before I would pay $1500 for any new or used factory guitar out there. In my opinion all flamenco factory guitars are way over priced because they lack the response necessary to make them suitable for flamenco even if the actions are modified.

Harry, my advice would be for you to play on a Dominguez and have return rights if you didn't like it. You should never base your opinion solely of a flamenco guitar on experiences of others.
