Floods in Brisbane

Brisbane is currently having its worse floods since 1974. My unit has not been flooded but my work is likely to go under tonight. The river will peak in about 6 hours. It is spilling over into the city centre and surrounding suburbs causing chaos and widespread damage. Here are a few vids so you can compare the river.
The third video i took this afternoon and shows how much the river has risen.

Note the red figures of people at 21 sec then spot them in the below video

On the news last night they showed cars being lifted up and swept along by the force of the water. The world's weather has gone mad.

Take care Australia - from drought to flood. I had a scary time in Spain for a couple of days when an almighty storm broke on us. So bad that one really couldn't stand outside and cars were swept into the sea down on the coast. My old house took a hell of a battering but fortunately we were on high ground. Many died in those floods.

Is that the time Stephen (Hill) lost some of his valuable tools on his moped trying to traverse the flood?

Yes, he had a house way up in the hills and the road was awful even in good weather. La Herradura was pretty smashed up. I think the older villages fared better in the hills but my valley took a while to recover - especially along the river bed.

I am more resigned to the dog not being around, but I sure miss him

In the south we have joined a 'shoebox' drive to try to help in a small way
still trying to contact some friends and family...

Thanks everyone, Now it is a waiting game for the waters to subside. This is going to be a massive task to clean up.

Flo, I work as a delivery driver in the CBD so i'm not sure what is going to happen next. I don't get sick or holiday pay. So i have no income at the moment.

I will wait until after the weekend and decide what i should do next. There are so many people in far worse situations than myself so i feel grateful.

There may be a Conde and a Maldonado for sale soon.

One thing that has struck me throughout all this is that on any TV or Radio report I have seen/heard...never once have I heard anyone whinge or moan about their lot.

A couple of interviewees even said "..well there's nothing we can do about it except have a tinny of beer and wait.."

A great credit to the Aussie stoical attitude under adverse circumstances.

I know...infact in some smaller communities i saw strangers go into the go back into town to help local businesses move some of their equipment and machines out...wow

Yeah Flo,

We do that here too....but it's usually the local criminals shifting the equipment and stock into a van.

Seriously though...we've had a few floods here too and everybody affected whinges and moans and blame the Council or the Government or the Met Office or the sinners who don't go to church and invoke the wrath of God etc..

(Quite right too IMO..

)

My cousin lives in Brisbane. The water had got up to his street yesterday and they cant leave the house.

What a mistake to let the damn fill up so much without easing the pressure until it was too late.

We have a new damn just up from Simon's valley on the way to the coast and after the rains this last winter it has filled up. Thing is when they built it they predicted it would never fill up so they never did the calculations as to how it would fare with the reservoir full. I have no idea if they decided to let some water go but i suspect not. Anyway so far so good and its great we can build damns in these usually parched lands to collect much needed water but....... we got to know what to do with them when the time comes to let some water go.

Good luck to you all out there we are thinking of you, such a tragedy that so many lives have been lost.
