How do you choose the piece you're g... 
Hello mates,
maybe it's something you don't struggle in much but actually I do a lot,
I mean it happened many times that after I finish working on a piece I stuck and get lost what to start with next
I guess some of you guys have teachers who lead them to what to play next but what about others who don't (I'm one of them)
how do you choose the next piece you're gonna work on ? I'm really curious
-do you follow a Preconstructed structure like a book or series etc ... or
-do you try to cover palos you havn't played before ... or
-do you play what you consider fun and will be astonishing to the audience or
-the piece just comes randomly to you or you have your own way in choosing a piece
just wanted to discuss it with you guys and get some ideas for my own good

I generally focus on the 15 or so 'major' palos first. If I think my material for one of them is clearly not as good as the others, Ill choose that one for the next material.
If im feeling solid on the major palos, Ill try to expand into the lesser used ones.

Sometimes I decide to try a whole new form - at the moment I'm learning Tanguillos - and I decided to do that just because my teacher has a really funky one to teach me.

At the same time I'm learning some new falsetas for Tangos, because the Tangos I play is quite simple and now I feel like I've got a bit more groove I want to add some new material.

So I guess it's back and forward between new forms and new falsetas.

I spend a lot of time working on my technique, the reason being that it prevents me from playing actual pieces.

So I am going through Herreros Sudies, page by page, book by book (3 books, at 2nd).
At the same time there are those damn challenges from ForoFlamenco They pop up and cut in whatever I'm doing.
And I work on stuff my new teacher gives me, this adds the palos, counting flamenco learning component.

And then I have a bunch of specific palos scores I bought that I have to get to, eventually, when I hit those palos I guess...

me too...I start a new piece ONLY when the previus comes "well done" :-)

i have a loooong list of things i need to hear out... i am never "out of material"
i recorded workshop videos 2 and 3 years ago and still had not the time to really focus on that material.

Thank you so much Chiste, Ailsa, rogeliocan, Paul, gbv, Deniz for spending the time replying to me . I got some ideas and understood some ways to choose my next piece

15 Major ones? wow !! this is a lot I always thought that Major + Minor palos could be around 15 or so , seem there are more
btw your way in typing is close to programming like IF....Else its a cool way

mmmm maybe I'm not understanding you or my knowledge isn't that good.
so far I am familiar with these 17 palos : buleria,solea,alegria,taranta,taranto,tientos,rondena,rumba,farruca,seguiriyas,colombiana,garrotin,Tanguillos,tangos,Fandangos de Huelva,Sevillanas,Guajiras
are these major or minor or in betwen ?

I know there are stuff like Jaleo or cana ... I don't know much about these

Maybe "prominent" would be a better word. Bulerias is a more prominent palo vs garrotin.

By the way, you typed "Garrotin" twice..

Hm, when I hear the term "major palo" I think of Soleá and Seguiriyas, also of Alegrias, Bulerías and maybe Fandangos...

By the way, I choose my next piece depending on the palo I want to get better in or that i want to learn next. But my Fokus ist an accompanying dancers, so i do lots of technique exercises and do not learn new stuff (or falsetas)very often.
When I decide to learn something new, it depends on two things:
1. Which palo is played very often in the danceclass?
2. Which sounds best, when my teacher plays it... ?

yea exactly that wat I was thinking but after Chiste said 15 major I was like " what are they ? "

I try to do a new palo , but because I want everything instantly I sometimes jump and have many half finished things, so I have to make a big effort to ignore other stuff and go back to finish some things I never finished before .. if you get what I mean ....
or sometimes Like I was learning a Seguiriyas and when half way through I came across a better one , so I kind of abandoned the first one ,, or sometimes I just add falsettas in to what I am doing ...its a very haphazard pattern of study , I know , but I do get around to them all eventually, recently I prefer whole tunes as to falsetas, ..
I have tried stringing falsetas together but it just doesnt sound right somehow . it sounds like what it is falsetas strung together ,, as oppose to a piece of music,,,
the problem is , when you are at the bottom there is so much to learn you dont know where to start. and being self taught etc....
actually thats another reason I like the challenges as the point of having to do it well to submit it keeps a focus on things ,,,,,,,,,

I peruse the shelves of my sheet music library and pick a random piece.

then i sight read.

if i like it i learn it.

i often decide to learn something after it catches my ear on a cd/mp3...i then find out if its tabbed and start learning or if its not i transcribe it myself which i love doing.
I find the trick for me is to stay inspired. when im inspired by a falseta that im learning...im literally itching to get hold of my guitar, whilst im out at work or with friends all i can think about is playing that piece!!!
I often dont get this feeling when im working on studies from technique books as they are often a little dull musically.
