Do you pay attention to the nail sha...

Do you guys take care of the nailshape of your fretting hand? ‘til now I didn’t that much, just kept them short with nail scissors. I’m considering paying more attention to the shape and file them instead of just cuting. I think a good nailshape of the fretting hand can be helpful for ligado techniques (taranta etc.) and for barre chords. any opinions, advices?

merci

Yeah, I think the only necessity for shape is to keep them as short as possible, otherwise you're digging into the fretboard! You really shouldn't need to use your left hand nails for ligado, the flesh should do the job.

i used to cut them but i found that if i cut them too short, the nail bed actually receded a little and sometimes the string would slip under the nail and it would hurt really bad.

i used to mess around with ligados using the nails too. cool effect but made some chords and shapes very difficult.

I just use clippers. I did know a couple of the guys from music school who would only file them. I never wanted to mess with that.

Filing them will result in shorter nails than you would be able with cutting them. I always filed them "until the flesh". But as you say i figured out that it not always good to have them at minimum length, ie in ligados. !!! ATTENTION !!! some 14 months ago i injured my "a" finger on the fretting hand by pressing way too hard on the string. One reason why the injury could take place was that the nail was so short that the string could dig deeper into the finger. My guess is that it tore up tissues in the inside of my finger which caused scar tissue and pain. So for me subjectively that is another reason to have some sort of nail left.

that's exactly what happened to me! i thought i was the only one. it was ****ing painful. i had three gigs to do in a row too, and i had to get drunk and soak my finger in hot water in order to play.

i know what you guys mean. so it's good to find a balance between too long and too short. if they are too long we are annoyed while playing crazy extended chord shapes or for example with barre, and too short can be painful because of strenght and we all know in flamenco guitar, fretting fingers have to build up a lot of strenght in some contexts. sometimes i'm simply too lazy to cut them.

an other issue for me is that my left hand m-finger nail is divided from the root in the right border of the nail, so i have to be very carefull well at least it's not the right hand, that would be worse...

I keep them very short as Deniz said " until the flesh " but never had any problems hope I don't in the future .

I find the file seems to be the best way to control myself from going too short. It's very frustrating when you cripple your playing for a few days with a couple of careless clips.
