there's no speed rule. you can play at whatever speed you want.

and the goal isn't to play perfect.

it's to do the best you can with the time you have for practice, upload your entry along with your peers, and get feedback from some helpful, knowledgeable folks.

the real reward is the personal feedback.

afterall, it's a challenge and not a competition. think of a weight loss challenge. sure, they may be a bit of competition to motivate everyone but in the end, everyone loses weight. so it's win-win for all.

to receive the full benefits of the challenge, just submit your entry. who cares if it's perfect? it's not meant to be.

don't be shy! send graham your entry!

I found that the more I tried the worse I got when it came to recording, Being fustrated made me tense up. My advise, have a walk or a drink, relax. Record your entry and send the first one in and forget about it for a couple of days.

Yep, same here. I get super conscious when recording and it's not the same as just playing, more mistakes, more careful of making mistakes resulting in a 'restrained' delivery.

Now that it's recorded and sent, and after not playing it for a couple of days, I can actually play it better. No stress, more time off it, I'm absorbing it.
So regardless of the final recording, it's a valuable tool to move forward, a step in the right directions.

I have sent in my entry. Although it's not the best, I'm still proud of it as I have learnt a lot while learning it. Also tryed my best with the recording but it does not sound so well :)

I don't recall a tempo in the rules. Did I miss something? Anyway, too late, I'm in at 150.

I am still over in Europe, but I had practiced this since I saw the post a few weeks ago and have a recording I did before I left the US still on my machine at home. I dont make it back till midnight tomorrow night, so I can't officially submit, but is there any way to throw in late to still get some critique?

BTW - made it to Duende in Amsterdam while I was here - thanks for the heads up on that place Kozz!

RE: ****Beginners Challenge Fall 201... (in reply to Graham_B

Hi fellow challenge participants, I have decided I am very unhappy with my entry and I am withdrawing from this challenge. This one was a bit over my head, I couldn't put it together and get it to swing and I was all wobbly when I played with the compas track. To much pressure. Even Andy didn't get it right!

But I will continue to work on it and the other falsetas in this Tango. This is a very hard piece for a beginner to sound good and tight imho.

I think I may have to adjust my focus, I am not going to be a solo star, I learned that long ago, but I do want to play a tango as a solo guitar piece that sounds nice and is not too hard for me. I am still a ways from that. I think I will work on accompaniment more now.

Good luck everyone!

Many, many thanks to the judges who have posted their scores and comments so far.

I will be closing the judging at midnight GMT on Friday 5th November and will post the results at that time.

Hello,
maybe a little bit early to ask, but is there something like a beginners spring challenge 2011?
And if the Answer is "Yes", is it possible to tell ones Palo-preference?

Isn't that part of the point though? - in that they define a Palo for us and we have to take it as a challenge?
I like having it selected for us personally and potentially facing a new challenge to learn a Palo we aren't super familiar with in addition to having to learn the associated falsetta.

RE: ****Beginners Challenge Fall 201... (in reply to at_leo_87

I musst confess i'm not aware of the rulings of this challange, I just saw there was one this fall and was disappointed cause I didn't have the Time to compete. I was not even aware that there must be a falseta, a "Bulerias-Rythm-Beginnerschallange" would have been ok for me, too (just an example). Because I do not have THAT much time for practicing i would like to (first) learn only palos i REALLY like, so I thought that it maybe possible to make a palo suggestion..

RE: ****Beginners Challenge Fall 201... (in reply to Schalli

it works like this: someone proposes a challenge because much time had passed since the previous one...others come in and say it's a good idea...someone takes up the role of director and proposes falsetas, others different ones, then they settle on one that's doable for a beginner...then the rules and deadline are posted...you have to check the forum at least once a week not to be late for one...
as of now there are no plans for a next beginners' challenge, but most probably there will be one next spring...until then whatever palo you want, learn it...
there've been soleá, bulerías and tangos previously, so i'd think it'll be time for a new palo then...alegría seems to be a good candidate, perhaps fandangos, maybe guajiras...

Note that for sure - cause both times now I have found it with like a week or two max before entries are due.
First one I thought I had down and done in time despite my tardiness, only to find out when I tried to keep it in compas with a backing track, I in fact did not have it AT ALL (although the months since that challenge have been rewarding and I think I got it nailed now)
Second one I also found late, but got it recorded a little early in anticipation of the challenge, then wasn't super stoked on what I had recorded vs. the progress I made on the falsetta over the next couple days, only to then be out of town and not be able to submit on time.

so net net - come here often and check if there is one. and make sure to follow the rules they define and get the darn thing recorded and up to the judges early :-)

I love these things. they seem to push me harder than I traditionally push myself. An Alegrias sounds like fun.

it's possible to do another challenge before spring. it's just a matter of how much interest there is.

RE: ****Beginners Challenge Fall 201... (in reply to at_leo_87

actually i'll sit around in my warm home alot during the cold wintertime, so i'm wondering what time of the year could actually be better to enter a challenge...

Suggestions in my favorite order would be:

1. Solea Falseta (at best not sounding too modern) or letra
2. Tangos de Malaga (not so much stuff out there...)
3. Bulerias Compas (i think it's quite challenging to get that fascinating feeling into it and it would be nice to find some unique rythm patterns)
4. Petenera (i saw some short vids at u tube, but i got the impression its not that complex as major palos like solea, with intro, letra, falseta, remate, llamada, escobilla etc.)

What i personally like in Flamenco is the Idea of unique Stuff, the Falseta told by " the unknown grandmaster" ( ;-) ), thats not known by everybody, maybe just by his scholars. so i'd like to get to know some stuff in the Challenge, thats defenitely in NO book or DvD teaching flamenco....
If i have to decide between happy and sad sounding guitar i would always say "sad" without even thinking about it, so "alegrias" sounds not that god in my ears. (i know its one off the major palos not yet in the challenge...)

RE: ****Beginners Challenge Fall 201... (in reply to at_leo_87

I'm game for a winter challenge and I'll try to learn whatever is thrown down...but I'm not too religious about which palo - happy, sad, whatever..We just did buleria though, and tangos. So obviously something else would be cool. Personally I like alegria and want to work on it more, but a serranas or seguira may be cool too.
name it...y'all know better than I

hey villain,
nice to hear your interested. but don't expect too much from me, i'm just a beginner trying to give his best^^
maybe the more expirienced guitarists at the foro know what would be a god joice of a piece for us. Maybe a concrete suggestion would attract more beginners...
Suggestions??

i think it's too soon for a new challenge.

december might be too hectic for people because of the holidays. how about a new one in january? your new year goal can be to participate in the challenge.

we usually do something with compas so everyone can work on their timing. i think alegrias is a good idea.
