Is that Miguel's Pedro de Miguel you're talking about? And who has the Contreras? Who are these friends of yours? How many flamenco's do you know? I wanna meet 'em!! Or are they just guys from the studio?

Anyway, you're absolutely spot on. Longer scale increases string tension and, apparently even slight difference in scale can cause this effect. However, it could also be that, by coincidence, the 655 one you played had higher tension strings.

Speaking of thin guitars. Have you tried the new "Andalusian Guitars" at the Twelfth Fret? They are being outsourced to Spain by a local guy who used to play in San Francisco, his name is Diaz I think. They are even "endorsed" by Paco de Lucia, supposedly. Anyway, they are very thin and light guitars, so they really yell!!!

Hi Nealf

There is a difference in tension between a 650 and a 655mm scale, but its not much and a lot less than the difference between the tension of med. and high tension strings. So i Guess that your Asturias is simply a softer guitar. It should be anyway. It is one of the differences between factory guitars and handbuild ones. Very few factory guitars that I've tried have been with a lot of pulsation and the ones that had it sounded bad. When you play a guitar with high pulsation you need to have high pulsation yourself in order to be able to "power" it. These two things together are what makes for a great flamenco sound wih volume and attack.
Another thing is that the guitars you mention did not vibrate. A Negra will always be a lot heavier than a blanca and it vibrates in another way, but it should vibrate.
3,5 - 3,6 inches is about standard in flamenco guitars. That should be around 9 - 9,2cm.

I think you are right. And the gym is called a guitar with a higher pulsation... And no, its not just because I want to sell you one.

But simply because a higher pulsation guitar will give you a higher pulsation, more power. It'll simply teach you to play it.

I agree with this changing preferences in guitars. You do it with sound and with this pulsation thing. Its very hard to go back when you've gotten used to a higher level guitar. One of the tricks (IMHO) in flamenco tecnique has something to do with elasticity in the guitar, the strings and your own body. The guitar and strings you can buy or change. The elasticity in you body you have do devellop. We are not born with it. I know 1,95cm 100kg muscle dudes with the sloppyest tecnique.

I choose strings, mostly for their elasticity and less for their sound. I want them to fit me and the guitar I play, and if they do,I'll make them sound nice (more or less) At the same time I keep another guitar, a softer one, stringed with softer strings, for when I'm not in the mood to power up the other one.
