RE: time for another challenge? (in reply to at_leo_87

i think two weeks apart is a great idea. let's focus first on the beginners challenge. that way, we dont have any body getting a head start on the other challenges.
let's focus on:
1. picking a piece
2. prizes (maybe this can even somehow work with the foro support idea)
3. getting more competitors
4. getting some judges

I really think the beginner intermediate advanced "learn a piece" challenge is lame. really lame. Learn pieces whenever you want, but lets do a challenge that doesn't involve listening to the same piece a whole bunch of times.

isn't that the point of the challenge? To see who can learn and best play the same piece?

RE: time for another challenge? (in reply to at_leo_87

it's been successful in the past and people seem to really learn a lot from it. but of course, all other ideas are encouraged.

cuerdas, i think the beginners did a tangos and solea once as well.

darkelie, the challenges go on for a month and it takes some time to get started so you should still have plenty of time.

i'm still waiting for the usual competitors to chime in. louis, cathulu, ailsa?

I don't get it, Hem..

Like, everybody should learn a different piece or what?

Please expand on your idea if you would...

cheers,

Ron

IMHO we should also have less official competitions with no prizes or judges (thus less time-consuming and therefore arranged more often) just for the sake of practicing some new material, especially for those of us who have no teacher.

Maybe just a poll thread so members can listen and vote for their favorite performance.

RE: time for another challenge? (in reply to at_leo_87

ok, so who can i count on joining the beginner's challenge? please chime in even if you're not sure yet.

prizes: this is a good chance for anyone with a product or service to advertise. speak up if you have something you'd like to offer for the challengers!

i'd like to propose some rules:

i would hate to see some stranger who we dont know anything about sign up for the forum, win the competition, take the prize, and then disappear forever. i'd like for this competition to be for actual foro members. so let me know if this is an **** move, but i suggest all competitors should have been a member for at least one month and has at least 20 posts.

recording, everything must be done in one take. one person, one guitar, one take. no punch ins or edits. reverb and eq is okay. only ONE guitar track. unless you're doing stereo with one take.
it is recommended that you record with solo compas or a metronome. solo compas will be provided.

RE: time for another challenge? (in reply to at_leo_87

I am in for the beginner challenge! I am going to bust out of beginners once and for all! I was thinking also it is time for a new challenge.

Anthony, I like your ideas, the last beginners challenge was done similarly so we don't get "poachers". But even then, there was some controversy about what constitutes a beginner. I don't think that can be policed though and it is better to leave it to the competitor to judge what level they enter based on past challenge winners and material. We now have three challenges on the board so people can see what is expected of them and the level of playing required.

What I would like to see if possible is also a "real beginners" challenge - a newbie challenge say, like a simple solea compas and very easy falseta - for the newbies that have just picked-up the guitar. But maybe there aren't enough newbies that want to do a challenge, but they should take one on because it puts you outside your comfort zone and you learn a lot.

ok, great! so for beginners we have so far:

cathulu
kozz
ailsa
minordjango
louis_b
veet
conradp
nenadk

a few of you have stated that you wanted to join but didn't specify what level.
in the very near future, we'll a challenge for intermediate, advanced, and newbie. so let me know if you want to be included in one of those.

Well, Im definately in. Id actually like to hear both the beginner and intermediate challenge pieces so that I can get an idea of where I stand. I like the idea of pushing myself to the intermediate level, but that may just be a pipe dream. I think Ill know once I hear both tracks.

ok sure. you should also check out the previous challenge to see where you stand. we may not pick the intermediate piece until the beginner challenge has started.

RE: time for another challenge? (in reply to at_leo_87

let's scrap the 20 posts rule, i agree with the one about having been a member for x period of time...there are many people, especially beginners who rarely post but read every day...like my friend who participated in the previous beginners' challenge, i wouldn't like to see members missing out just because they haven't posted enough...

btw! those who participated in previous beginners' challenges (and the last one was a while ago!) should now really be looking forward to the intermediate one as they surely are improving, aren't they?

as to what constitutes a beginner, our ears can tell that, last time was some controversy, but everybody including the person involved agreed that he was in fact well above beginner level, so there was really no problem about that...i think the people here playing and listening to this kind of music can judge their own level of playing very well and i'm not expecting any controversy this time around...

RE: time for another challenge? (in reply to at_leo_87

ok, we'll scrap the minimum post rule. i'll make definite rules once we get the official thread going.

cuerdas, only the advanced level play a whole piece. intermediates usually do a few falsetas. beginners do one or two falsetas with some compas playing in between and before and after.

ok, here's the last beginners challenge to give you an idea:
http://www.foroflamenco.com/tm.asp?m=125489&p=1&mpage=1&tmode=1&smode=1

the last intermediate:

advanced:
