audix i5 dynamic mic

i got this mic to use with my new amp.

it's hard to say what's doing what. but the sound i get is very natural and feedback has been easily controlled so far.

this mic has been compared to the popular sm57. apparently, it's very similar to sm57 but has a better bass response. i haven't tried the sm57 but the audix i5 does have a nice low end to it.

yes its said to have a "better" bass response, but that isn't true. It just has a bump at 150Hz

In fact, my personal opinion is that this bump at 150 hz is undesirable since that is a frequency i very often cut.

slightly more pertinent is that the audix has a scoopier mid by a bit and a slight rise at 1.5 - 2k. This would certainly contribute to the perception that it has a "better" bass response because a lot of the mids are subdued, leaving bass and treble.

this mid scoop. is it also called the disco smiley?

i did have to turn the bass a bit on my amp. so how would you compare this to the sm57? or any other dynamics in the same price range. i still have the receipt for my audix....

those two are fine. I like them well enough. I prefer the beta 52 but thats more expensive.

ultimately, work with what you have. the audix is fine, the shure is fine.

the audix with probably cut thru a little better for a flamenco because it has the scoop. although, technically it isn't a scoop because the chart shows that everything else is boosted...it still means that your 150hz will have far more going on that 500 lol.

keep the audix.

yeah i like that mic. It gives giant testicles to snare drums. GIANT. the only problem i forsee with its use is that 150 bump. If you are playing thru an amp, it might be wise to get a lil rackmount eq (graphic or parametric the choice is yours) and then use that fella to take care of the 150 or 250 problems depending on the room.

hey kev, i gigged all weekend with the mic. it's a great mic! but i did notice that bump. i played it through a pa system and my amp and with both, i had to turn down the bass. it has great feedback resistance but what feedback it did have was definitely in the lower regions, especially when i got closer to the mic.

the bump!

you can avoid this using the polar pattern.

It is a cardiod pickup pattern so your amp should be either directly in front of you or somewhere either very far left and front or right front of the mic for best sound rejection.

thanks for the tip! unfortunately, for some gigs, the amp HAS to be right in front of me and mic to the left. it's so close that the mic even picks up vibrations from the amp through the mic stand!

one thing i don't understand about the cardiod shape. actually how big is it? 10 inches? 5?

presumably the size is irrelevant. it really depends on how high the gain on the mic pre is.

if i were you i'd get an equalizer and taper everything below 250, and also do a cut at 150. that will solve some of the problem. if you can, also put your amp on a piece of foam or something to reduce vibration transfer to the mic. its something, not much, but itll help

ah i see. ok, now that gives me more ideas to play with gain and master level. before i kind of basically thought gain just meant volume.

it just so happens that i have left over shock absorbing foam from the dance floors i made!

do you have any recommendations for a cheap but effective mixer?

yeah its pretty simple. mic in, same kind of cable out to amp.

drag the sliders down at 150 ish and you will be solid. Haaachaaa!
