miguel angel cortes encuentro dvd

got this whilst i was over in spain and only just recently got a quiet momement to sit down and watch it.

very inspiring and amazing toque. the pieces covered/done are taken from his two albums patriarca and bordon de trapo.

one issue i had is that most of the pieces were played full speed with no slow down. of course you have the book as a reference but i like this small detail to watch different ideas going on technique wise. miguel also does some toques in various keys which such as solea, buleria and tangos. so alot of variety and ideas to allow you to expand your knowledge in playing the same palo in different keys

video comes in at a whopping 120 mins, so the money spent is well worth it.

my hats off to the guys in encuentro.

now all they need do is convince vicente amigo, paco cepero or diego del morao to do an instructional.

in the blurb it says

Solea en mi/
Solea en Sol/
Solea en re/

Are they actually in Sol/G, in Re/D and in Do/C?

presumably G, D and C phrygian?

with standard or alternate tunings?

or did they mean G#/Ab, D#/Eb and C#/Db?

some media players, such as VLC media player will slow down video with sound, the one I have (VLC) slows down like it was tape, so the pitch is lowered. At half speed the pitch is an octave lower so you don't have to re-tune

there are probably other media players more sophisticated than mine though...

They really meant soleares on E, G#, D#, tangos on A, G# and C#, and bulerias on A, C# and D#, and they are very interesting. One of the nice things about the book is that all the pieces are in standard tuning.

It would have been cooler to see more uncommon tonalities, at least it wold have been more promising. I dont know why the tracks are mislabeled. They probably dont take it that seriously, im not sure this is appropriate respecting the high level of music we have here, and also the aim as being a very good (and thus rightly very expensive) tuition DVD, which Encuentro always stood for (at least in my eyes).

Some time ago I bought the tab of a Cortes taranta from Alain Foucher. Only started looking at it recently but it's really nice and not very difficult. Well worth checking out. Should still be on his website.

deniz the material, is kick ass, encuentro are the only ppl doing high level artists doing their falsetas. i think we should be grateful for what we get. you often get ppl arguing about the tomatito scores in alternate tuning stuff not reflecting the written music. etc

I've have got this dvd too and its great! also that there are no weird tunings is a good thing, and all the songs are very original and modern and still sound flamenco, not "jazzy". most of the parts are similar too his last cd. Definitely the guijira is my favorite, (which actually doesnt sound like a guijira at all)
but its not really a instructional dvd, he doesnt explain anything and rarely speaks, which I dont mind. Its more a listen and learn dvd.

I've already learned a lot and copy some useful parts and i'm thinking about selling it.
not sure how much I'm asking for it but if you're interested, pm me.

Everything in Do, Re, and Sol would have been "uncommon". C# is great, D# too. The material might be kick ass, but an announcement like the above tracklist raises my expectations. For somebody like me it is already a disappointment to see that the tracklist is not that cool as expected.
