Carmen las Cuevas (or other similar ... 
So a while back I was talking about doing the intensive guitar program at Cristina Heeren this summer, but I recently found out I got accepted to Cambridge to do a one-year physics masters (yay!) which will pretty much empty the bank. So I'm thinking of doing something cheaper than Cristina Heeren so I can keep some spending money for next year.

I was thinking of Carmen las Cuevas in Granada, maybe four weeks or so of their intensive guitar program. Has anyone done it or heard about it and is able to give some advice on whether it's any good or not? (Mark, I'm looking at you!)

Also, is anyone familiar with similar programs in other cities in Andalucía, for about the same price (~400 euro for a month)?

hey amigo,
well done on the master 1 year , gee 2 for me , excellento.

go to carmen, it was really great, beautiful city, and fine people, i cant think of a better time in the last 5 years for me , and ive done some things.

i was really inspired practice like 1 hour a day , 5 drinking with the other folk and seeing great gigs.

i practice 30 a week so the above is cool.

also many great local players, check out a gig program.

have fun with it, and stay at the school , its the best choice

Ok I would recommend Carmen de las Cuevas for 2 reasons
1. If your Spanish isnt so good, the staff are bilingual and they will help you with the courses and finding accommodation etc. They will also let you know what concerts and events are going on in Granada while you are there.
2. The course is reliable....that is to say they will teach you what you have signed up for and the teacher will turn up at the arranged time. They will take you up to an intermediate standard by Granada levels, which is to say a high level by international standards. The price is good as a package and probably cheaper than private lessons.

I would not recommend Carmen de las cuevas if you already have a high level of Spanish and a high level of Flamenco technique already because the teachers there are usually proficient but not in the same league as the recording artists. If you already play well enough to give concerts then you should look for a private teacher. That in itself comes with its own set of problems with reliability, price etc....but thats the flamenco world!

I was just about to start a thread called Carmen Las Cuevas when I saw this. The good news is that Emilio is now contracted to teach there. His own school closed due to neighbours complaining about the noise from the dance classes and anyway working at Carmen Las Cuevas is far less stressful than running his own school. So he is very happy to be back there. This also means he will be reliable and punctual as is not always the case with his private classes. He's teaching a beginners and an advanced class.

I've also been there in....2000 I think? wow, that was almost 10 years ago!!!
Recommend them highly, one of the best experiences I have.
Friendly guys, great city, great concerts -I met Miguel A. Cortés in a bar-, great memories. I wish I could stay there more time, or forever, but I didn't had the money even for food in the last 2 days..

Now that's the best news I've heard all day Thanks for all the reviews guys, I'm glad to know people have had such good experiences there. Kate and Mark, see you in Granada then!
