MD, i totally agree with you about Legnani. Actually most of his caprices and other compositions are really good but one in particular that i do not like and the reason i deleted it was because it reminded me of it. The video Grisha did on alzapua inspired me to practice more alzapua. Also i have to continue to compose my own stuff which is torturing already for even the most experienced so needless to say how it will be for me. 10 percent inspiration and 90 percent perspiration? Oh well, it's a long road ahead.

I think you are referring to the last Legnani caprice, which is really not very musical.

jg, you play very well and your picado tone in my honest opinion is the best I have heard on this site., it really did inspire me to practice much more on sound. Its kinda funny how things work you get inspired by Grisha and I get inspired by you, everything trickles down in a positive direction.

You said in a prior thread that you were not able to reach your true potential at an earlier time in your life, I hope the things that were keeping you from your true potential are in the past and the future is more fruitful.

You have amazing potential jg, your uploads show that. The SOUND you are getting from the guitar now is the sound that I practice hard to achieve.

Good luck to you and I look forward to being inspired by you with each upload.

Rain thnx for those generous comments. I've lacked motivation, etc... for a long time but I guess it's never too late to try and get back on track. Once again thanks and I hope you and many others on the forum reach their desired musical goals.

No, not at all at_leo. No need to apologize. It would actually be more impressive if i can do it ascending and descending for 5 minutes straight. :)

im regretting i didnt play more of those technical etudes on classical guitar , i never had the bare technique, i mean with your picado you get through really well , some of those Rodrigo pieces have monster picado !.

back to carcassi for me ! and a bit of coste, hes pretty fine!

technique and rhythm for me this next year !

220 for scales ! few im aim for like half that

How about I post something about 3-finger scales? Very useful when 2 start to feel sluggish. In fact, that's the only thing I practiced for a few years. Might as well use it.

Hi there Grisha. I would love something on three finger scales. Do you play them rest stroke ? I cant manage rest stroke with three finger scales.

Do you improvise with them, I just dont feel like I am really choosing the notes at high (well for me it seems high speed obviously not two bloody twenty though !!!) speeds with three finger scales. Pulgar and im I do.... a little.. sometimes..

I don't know if anyone is interested but I have been working on some combinations of scales and arpegios with quintuplet tremolo which are interesting and seem like a good warm up preparation for standard stuff.

Obviously I wont be able to match the execution of you guys but if anyone wants them I could try and explain them a bit.

Jp and Grisha: those scales are unbelievable!

Here my brother and I improvised some scales: this was over 10 years ago. Even thought the scales are not super fast, I haven’t been able to improve them and I find hard to maintain the speed.

You know what is shocking, that these technically supernatural players are not millionaires. Grisha must be a one in a million, maybe one in 10 million.

So what does that say?

It takes more than technical excellence to really succeed in music - in fact you don't need technical excellence, and maybe that is a handicap in some way also. You gotta build a mystery and an aura, and compose some beautiful and original music that somehow catches the public's ear. A tall order! Wasn't Paco basically a nobody on the grand stage (not the flamenco stage) until Entre dos Aquas caught fire into the general public?

My son's bass guitar teacher, my god he can play guitar, better than the flamencos I learn from. He can play a solo guitar instrumental in all twelve keys pretty effortlessly - so he says and I haven't seen anything yet that would make me doubt him. But he is a nobody really, learning to be a high school music teacher, which I think he will do very well at btw.

Anyways, sorry for the thread hijack. Life is crazy.

Wow ...I have missed all this in the last few days. That is killer picado by the way. I have struggled with picado throughout most of my playing life and there is no way I can get that kind of speed.
I dont lose sleep about it (any more) My saying is if at first you cant succeed.....cheat!
What I mean is that some players here may be feeling a bit overwhelmed by the guys here with that technique.
Dont forget there are loads of techniques and ts best to use what ones you find most strong.
Personally my thumb work and picado was always difficult, but I made up for it by working on arpeggios rasgueos and tremelos.
When to listen to guys like pepe habichuela who have a good but not astounding picado, you can hear that this is more than made up for by the beautiful tremelos and apeggios that he has.
Mark indigo - that exercise is great....and it is Manolo Sanlucar by the way, not El Entri who wrote it.
I play it first with that fingering, then again with a double arpeggio, then next time with a tarrega (gran estudio) arpeggio,
next time with tremelo and finally with a very fast alternating triplet arpeggio.

As for speed ...I use the technique grisha showed us in this thread with the entre dos aguas example..
basically tremelo on the right hand and also Gerardos 3 finger picado idea (which as Ricardo points out is also technically an arpeggio).
They are much easier to acheive that the picado demonstrated here.

Still, I'm blown away by the dedication of you guys...amazing playing!

This is what I tried to warn the "guitarrista" about and to perhaps to tone down his enthusiasm for taking on anybody on the Forum in technique challenges etc..

Still...we all learn, I suppose!

so speaking of technique , it seems like Etude no1 villa lobos is a classic study, id like to learn it, but even after warming up, i get half way through and my rh dies!.

my m,a combination is terrible, any simple idea on how to approach improving m,a , combination with the goal of learning say the lobos.

hes me ranting about it and a little demo.

Why don't you just practice P M I A M A I M part of it, accenting different strings (like only first, or only second every time you play it).

accenting different strings, you means cycle the pattern on separate strings i heard the piece like 10 year ago , still cant play it !!

bit depressing, i feel like never touching the guitar again .

Hey django, don't give up man. I looked at your videos and I think you just need to work on right hand position...I'd say open up your hand more, get your thumb out front of the other fingers so it's not in the way, and maybe play a little closer to the soundhole. Personally I'd only lift my elbow up that high when playing picado on the bass strings.
Also it sounds like your nails are a little long and too pointy in the middle. I'd try flattening them out more so you don't have to push so hard on each note.

Just watch Grisha and Juan's technique videos and try to copy their hand position. I've found that if your technique visually resembles that of great players, chances are it's sounding right too. Just my $.02
