What about your Nails ?

Hello my friends,

First of all I'm new to this forum and I just want to salut you guys for this wonderful job and community .

Second : I would like to ask you about your nails :: are they strong ?
do they melt ? do you face problems with them ? what is the solution and your advices for me ?

to mention my problem .. I've played guitar for about 8 years now and I never faced any problems with classical music but when it comes to flamenco the nail of my thump ( P-finger ) always melt down specially when I play alzapúa techniques or when I play flamenco pieces that needs a lot of thump stroking
like now I'm looking at my thump and it has two edges high one on the right and lower one on the left . I never faced this with other fingers (i-m-a-x) its
just my thump . so are there any advices how can I fix this and make it stronger.
thank you all.

I have very weak nails. Without protection they break from 1 lesson playing for dance. I protect with tissue. I glue 3 layers on the thumb and the a finger. And 1-2 on i and m. I use glue which women use for gluing their fake-nails on their real nails. You can buy it without these fakenails. But still very expensive. The good thing is.. its not dangerous. Whereas superglue contains several carcinogens and other bad substances. Its gets dry within 30mins. My protection can resist my strokes for around 1 week.

I dont recommend to use superglue, table tennis balls, acrylic updates, nail hardener, chert or olive oil. It doesn't work properly enough for my wishes.

You have to find your way... try mine. Maybe youre happy with it. ...I am not happy with it since there is no sticky silk available anymore which was the absolute best together with the glue.

PS. I love to drink milk..I drink around a liter/day. (I found a very tasty 3,5% fat milk.. mjam!) I can tell you, it doesnt change anything with your nails. ;.)

I wanna add. Dont cover the whole nail with the tissue. Just the front 5-10mm. Than you get it off easier when it gets dry and breaks. Otherwise you will have fragments left all over your nails.

milk is cool.
i also drink a lot of milk.
the absolute best time for drinking milk is after a drinking orgy.
when you go to sleep, in the middle of the night, when you most likely get thirsty and wake up, drink cold milk instead of water.

you will never drink anything else

btw, i buy my milk from the farmer here , its expensive but tastes completely different (you have to get used to it though).

In Holland we allways drink a lot of milk...
We used to think it is very healthy and a lot of calcium for your bones and nails....

They started a few years to wonder why so much elderly people brake their hips and leggs if they fall.
The number of broken bones where much lower with elderly people in f.i. Japan, where the people drink very little milk.

So they investicated it and it seems that the milk, that contains a lot of calsium, also a lot of fosfor that prefent to take the calsium into your body. ( Also you need Magnesium to take the calsuim into your body and milk have not enough magnesium). The milk contains a lot of proteins, that gives you a lot of sour ( acid) in bodyfluid.
That makes that your body is destracting calsium from your bones ( and nails).
It leads to osteoporose.

I nearly stopped drinking milk a few years ago, and my nails are much stronger than before.

So maybe it is good to think about your milk consumption....

Peter

Avoid cyanoacrylate based products. If you can find OPI nail products, find their "Nail Envy" matte finish product. Two light coats (dry in between) on top and underneath the thumb nail. When removing to redo it (every few days), don't use an acetone based polish remover. Use an acetone free remover.

Lots of calcium over time will help too (supplements, use lots and no, you won't get kidney stones nor the other host of myths around it).

If you can't find the OPI products and are located in the EU, find Orly Nail Armour. It has silk strands in it and becomes a silk wrap. Same deal, two coats EXCEPT you put the two coats on brushing longs strokes perpendicular to the other (now dry coat). That way the criss-cross pattern between the two coats helps make it stronger due to the silk strands basically becoming like a fiber glass layer. Little harder to clean off though.

Anything with gelatine is supposed to be good for the nails. I take cod liver oil capsules as the outer casing is made of gelatine and the cod liver oil itself if good for my joints. Just don't make the mistake of biting one though, the oil has a vile taste.

Many discussions on this in the archives. I recommend as Doit said, nail glue which IS cyanoacrylate. As long as it is only that and not with added formaldehyde etc, it is fine and non toxic for your body and nails. They use the same substance to heal open wounds, and you can use as Krazy Glue or nail glue to cover and protect cuts and scrapes etc. Just avoid bonding skin or getting in eyes. DON"T REMOVE! It will flake off with dead skin after several days. Or you play it off with lots of rasgueado.

I am curious why it is so expensive in Germany or Europe??? I mean what do you mean by expensive? In USA, a small brand name bottle is under $5, and lasts months. Keep it in a plastic bag and it won't dry out.
