you already have a stage name...its starting to be serious.
I go by the name Jesus a.k.a. alejandro
My cajon player friend is Hot Chocolate so together we go as
Jesus and Hot Chocolate. catchy name isnt it.
Its good to have lots of alias names, 'cause if you get in to a rap battle with some other guitarist, you can use those personas to boost your flow.

Ummm, yeah ...
i dont know i can only speak for myself
and i dont speak spanish, am not into spanish culture, dont know spanish food. I just love learning and doing this art form, that is the most authentic i will get.

i'm getting more and more into the culture, not so much to assimilate and try to fit in but just because i'm curious. i think it's helpful to learn spanish though, because cante sounds so much cooler and has more of an impact when you understand what they're saying, and because it's just nice to be able to converse with flamencos, who sometimes can only speak spanish.

yes i translated my favorite letras, sometimes its interesting, sometimes not. Some are related to history or reflect some deeper things, thats cool.
Ive always wanted to learn "basic spanish", for the same reason as you, but that would be like 4th grade spanish, nothing to do with speaking a language in my opinion. It is an atavism that flamencos are automatically expected to be spanish, meaning it will change through time, the more people get to know the truth about their flamencos in "western" town

. So far i havent seen a guitarrist in germany using a Spanish name, i think thats good. After all it bears a risk of getting ridiculed, if you are not 100% assimilated in "being spanish".

that's a good point, i haven't thought of that. but i'm not too worried, it's just kind of like joke that started in dance class.

and yes, spanish is hard to learn. at least i can read spanish children's books now.

but what's amazing is all the non-native english speakers here who speak and communicate so well in english. when i think about that, i think, "well, what's stopping me from learning another language?"

It's a funny thing isn't it, lots of people do that here in UK, adopt a Spanish name. Each to their own, but I don't want to do it because it just makes me feel uncomfortable. A while ago I was in a dance group where we were made to wear fake tan, dye our hair dark, and I did that although it felt silly. But I didn't take another name.

So on posters and stuff I just use my first name. The dance teacher whose classes I play for calls me Ailsita

and that has stuck with all the dance students.

Sounds like you are doing really with those gigs Anthony - great opportunity.

not only my first name is being affected but my last name as well. it's tran. so sometimes i get antonio tiri tiri tran tran tran, etc. at which point, i have to play some E and B7 chords until it resolves.

ailsita! that's actually pretty cool sounding but if you're uncomfortable with it, then there's no point.

now that fake tan and black hair business, that's just strange and unnecessary!

No Ailsita is OK, because it's sort of a joke! And it's like Antonio - you can hear that it's related to your real name. It's more when people adopt completely unrelated names that I think it's strange. I can't really give an examples of what I mean without naming and shaming tho!!

Sorry thats not what i meant. Insider jokes etc. all different case. But on posters etc it is about how you present yourself to outsiders. Also, there is no spanish name like Ailsita right? But Antonio actually is, like Juan or Paco etc. I hope we are clear now.
About dying hair... flamenco dancers seem to be like soldiers, uniform in blackening the hair, tanning etc. Meanwhile i understand a certain uniformity in dresscode, i think it can go too far. But as we all know, if there are 5 black haired and one blonde dancer, the latter one will get b*tched away quite soon.

i guess it's because i'm just a small time unknown, local guitarist that i dont worry too much about how i present myself.

so at what point to do i become "in" enough for a cool stage name like "hot chocolate?" it's like a video game. i want to beat some levels and get a high score, so i can input my own funny name.

ok here are the levels:

Stage names
Paco-"..." (insert your first name) - 1000 points
Double names - 10.000 points
Hot chocolate - 1.000.000 points

You can gain points by
shake hands with famous flamencos - 100 points
a trip to spain - 1000 points
moving to spain - infinite points

so to answer your question, you would need 1000 trips to spain for the stage name hot chocolate, or moving to spain. That will make you a bit more spanish than being a small time guitarrist in Boston, US. As long as that wont happen, or you dont obsessively deal with spanish in any other way, you will always be a white bread for me

just like myself and all the other students that live their lives in a non-spanish country, that have no reason to pretend to be spanish by origin or by any other way

Ps: I have found german guitarrists with spanish names, but they have spent several years in spain, thats something to consider. If somebody wants to be seen as "spanish" by all means, and hes putting some effort in it, then ok. But else not, IMO. Especially as small time guitarrist there is no pressure for you to act spanish, so why risk it? IMO anywas.

I think you are in a good way with antonio. Its a bit shy still, so I would go something like dr.Pepper or Cornflakesito

With a stage name like that the only suprise for the people will be positive one, its a win-win situation.
of course its always best when somebody else gives you the name. Its kind of illegal to give yourself nicknames, but if your flamenco community is small or they just dont get what going on

, the only possibility is to give one for yourself.

ok, well i don't want to be white bread anymore. i want to be the real whole grain stuff! it's healthier. at any rate, i should seriously focus more on my playing before i contemplate cool stage names. now is there a cheat i can input to help speed that up? i want to hurry up and get to the fun stuff like deciding between a helicopter or a ferrari.
