The End of Flamenco (Yes!)

From the Department of Useless Information:

On 6 February 1916, in the South Atlantic some 500 km. NNE of Pernambuco, the German merchant raider Möwe fired a warning shot across the bow of the British steamer Flamenco. The Flamenco, of 4629 gross tons, of the Pacific Steam Navigation Company, ignored the warning and steamed on. The Möwe, captained by His Excellency Nikolaus Burggraf und Graf zu Dohna-Schlodien, then put a shell into Flamenco, killing a crew member. Flamenco then heaved-to, was boarded and searched by a detail from the Möwe, and was found to contain nothing of interest. Her sea-cocks were opened, explosive charges laid, and Flamenco was sent to the bottom.

Möwe sunk a total of 38 ships during 5 successful cruises between 1 November 1915 and 22 March 1917.

Hope that helps.

runner, I think he's asking about the relevance of a WWI warship, aside from the fact that it was named after a Spanish art form. I'm probably wrong, however.
