😂 the only thing that sucks is your self deprecation

Those rosettes are excellent. So vibrant. And different.

I really like them.

I enjoyed that rosette thread on delcamp but some of the were surprisingly pretty dull...Maybe classical guys prefer the more traditional stuff..

I dunno. That last one of yours there with the coloured chevrons is great.

Agreed. Nice stickers as always. I always admire Banana’s use of color. Not afraid to use it!

The rosette on the guitar that went to customer in Hokkaido last week.

This is a great rosette, avante-garde in a way but still traditional.

RE: Peek at a new rosette design. (in reply to Stu

I’ll show you the rest of it then.

It’s a spruce top, 650 mm scale

The sides are Macassar thin, laminated over Hinoki- total thickness 3.5 mm very stiff
The back is Cherry or as we say here Sakura.

I found two Macassar logs in a lumber yard and had them sawn into fingerboards and ribs. Same lumberyard I found a 4” thick slab table top of Sakura, I had it sawn into backs. I married the two in five special sets with Sakura backs and Macassar sides, because the browns and golds in each wood look so beautiful together. Plus I wanted an active back of a non rose wood.

This one is set up more like a classical, or perhaps in between? The treble is about 2.8 mm and the bass about 3.2 or 3.4 you could play flamenco on it, but the laminated ribs make the whole thing feel too heavy. It’s a guitar with a flamenco kind of voice if you pushed it, but it has a treble register that’s made for singing melodies. It’s like a mullet hair cut, business in the front, party in the back.

I adore it. It is like the custom marbled end-papers I am using for binding my books. Bold and little eccentric (especially under a UV light).

Your guitars look more and more beautiful, Stephen. Well done, it has been duly noted.

Thank you!

The design is a spin off of the traditional Japanese pattern called Seigaiha. It was by request of the customer I use the design as a motif in the rosette.

But it’s also been pointed out it looks like Kamaboku - fish cake 😂

This old thread is fun because it’s got snarky comments by Ron ( page 2), I’m sure he would have pointed out the similarities between fish cake and my rosette. 😂

The sides and headstock look like cat fur! That's a compliment.😄

It's beautiful. Honestly those sides are incredibly striking!! Thanks for sharing these pictures!

I can't recall ever seeing such contrasting woods used for back and sides.

That's fish cake rosette looks 60s/70s psychedelic to me. It's really cool.

Beautiful guitar. I would be curious if you could get a more flamenco voice out of it as it would be a stunner with the sides like that. While I am not a luthier, what about a back of lighweight cypress to counter balanca a bit on the sides being heavy? Or maybe a maple?

Gioachino Giussani uses double backs and sides to force the tone through the top for his classicals. They are pure canons in terms of volume and have a very aggressive voice to them even though it's a classical. If not for the sustain he brings forward they would easily pass for flamenco with how hard they attack.

Stephen, this guitar is very zippy looking. I mean dazzling. A good thing. Not just the rosette but the figure in the headplate (whose shape complements the grain pattern) and the sides, all of it. Owning that guitar would wake me up every time I went to play it, let alone the sound.

Thank you Ethan, I wouldn’t have been unhappy to keep it for myself. Lucky I have a few more sets of this Sakura / Macassar

The Sakura isn’t that much different than Cypress in strength and density. It feels a lot like cypress, but probably is close enough you couldn’t tell it from cypress. This guitar is braced asymmetrically( the one above with the fancy seigaiha rose) oddly enough in the modern French influenced way, think child of Friederich. But with single thickness thin Macassar ribs and more flamenco top bracing this could be a killer ‘media Blanca’

I just made up that term right now 😂 media Blanca-

I’d probably call it ‘Sol e Sombra’ if I were to make branding of it. Actually that’s not a bad idea.
The next one I’m building is also a classical ( a guy has got to make a living) and it’s a Cedar top, 640 mm scale. Here:

Trying to find the balance… not there yet.

I find I hate something after I’ve worked it for too long, I just need to step away I suppose?

I was super excited about the red but now I’m feeling she is turning into a bit of a tart…

The red is a companion piece to the variegated black I sent you, oh wait, I think I sent you the red too?
