Amir Haddad

Thomas was kind enough to PM me this link of Amir trying out various guitars.

I've always loved the guy's sound from the very moment I heard him on his "Understanding Flamenco" CD, which is IMO a must for beginners.

He has a great thumb technique and sound and that "Moorish" sound that has always attracted me to Flamenco in the first place.

(Probably being an accomplished Oud player helps too!)

I had the chance to meet Amir in Aberdeen when he was appearing as Oud player for Radio Tarifa, a most magnificent band and he gave me a bottle of beer in the band room and we spoke for a while and he was a most sincere guy of Palestinian and Latin hertiage who grew up in in Germany but his calling was for Jerez where he went to at an early age and lived there for a long time.

He's definitely got "the sound" IMO.

I reckon he's been a professional musician since his teens.

He is the consumate musician IMO.

He's a young guy!

Not only does he play Madrid or Jerez Flamenco really, really well...

He has a World Music band as well... (ZooBazzar)

The guy plays in in a Hard Rock band too! (Members of Parliament)

Check them out on MySpace.

I think the guy is terrific!

He's one of my very favourite guitarists.

cheers,

Ron

Lovely, thank you for sharing this.
A few falsetas in the Granaina are reminiscent of Vicente Amigo’s “Morente” -a granaina, as well- but exuding more of that crescent moon’s flamenco I too am so keen about.
On a side note, I really appreciated the comparative presentation of the four instruments. The Barba's blanca had the better tone on my speakers.

He's doing a workshop in Granada in August organised by Johannes from Mundo flamenco.

I think Amir originally comes from Frieburg. See non Spaniards can make it if they're good!

I find his playing something special- very musical, also his right hand technique is an inspiration to me.

Hey Ron,

Nice to find another Haddad aficionado. My love heard him on the radio and bought me the cd Pasando por Tabernas. I used the first three chords from Topkapi to make a ringtone just for her. Haddad plays a 1984 José López Bellido on it.

Amir's album is worth getting, he has great pieces, excellent tone...he's muy flamenco, too bad he doesn't concentrate on flamenco exclusively...
on myspace i've had the pleasure of talking to him and he said last year that he was working on a new album, these pieces must be glimpses into that, i'm hoping he'll have his new material out soon!

Yes! Has anyone else noticed that right hand alzapua technique is VERY similar to the right hand technique of playing Oud ? I have always thought so, but never before heard anyone say so... Thank you Ron!

You beat me to it. Is he special in those other genres as he is in flamenco?

Hi Mike,

When I met him he was resident in Madrid, but his Rock band is performing in Germany, so maybe he shares his time between the two places.

If you have a look at his MySpace page you can see that his work diary has a lot of dates in Spain, plus a guitar workshop in Granada the first week in August.

cheers,

Ron

i've heard about workshops that Amir gives in freiburg south germany.
they are organised by johannes from the guitar shop mundo flamenco. they also do weekend workshops held in a nice hotel in the black forest, i think i'll participate to the next one. I've heard he's an excellent teacher.

I searched unsuccessfully online for this cd.

Anyone have more information, is this an instructional cd or is it just for listening to?

Where can I get it?

PS

"Yes! Has anyone else noticed that right hand alzapua technique is VERY similar to the right hand technique of playing Oud ?"

In his guitar method book, Juan Martin mentions that Alzapua is related to Oud technique

Thanks, "Pasando por tabernas" is his solo record.

I'm looking for the "understanding flamenco" cd Ron mentions, I think this is something else.

I'm having trouble finding this CD as well and the link above is no longer working.

Are you referring to the Faustino Nunez "Understanding Flamenco" CD and Book? Does Amir plan on that CD?

I can't find anything billed under Amir as "Understanding Flamenco".

Thanks!

Thanks. I did find that in my previous searches.

But in the first post Ron mentions a CD called "Understanding Flamenco." The one in your link doesn't appear to the same as mentioned above.

Flamenco World carries it. It is an instructional CD and book which he does the guitar work on. The CD is excellent, but the book is worthless. Still worth the money.

Type in "understanding flamenco" in the search box

I won this CD for one of the beginner challenges and I still listen to it regularly because of Amir's playing. Great stuff.
