This is the guitarrists I like to listen to. Its all with cante. I have stopped listening to solo guitar a long time ago. Boring IMHO

I don't think we are saying that Flo.

The majority of the general public aren't really interested in "music"..as in the elegance of melody, harmony, phrasing you find in more "serious" music such as Classical, Jazz, Flamenco...etc etc.

They like music to set their atmosphere, like "body" music for dancing to at clubs and parties, or romantic music, or music that they like driving to and makes them feel up, or music which consoles them when they have been rejected in love etc.

I like that stuff too, but I listen to it casually maybe on the radio or something.

I just have no interest in studying it or listening to it critically.

The only stuff that gets on my nerves is stuff which sorta sounds like Flamenco, but is really just watered down slow and fast rumba with predictable tunes, because my brain automatically slips into critical analysis mode so it sounds crap compared to some of the great authentic Flamenco I've heard.

I also find it a bit annoying too when some players present it as "Flamenco" as it does a complete disservice to the art and artists and misinforms the audience.

I'm comfortable with that. Crap. cRAP. Ceeerrrrrrraaaaappppp!!!!!

Music for music's sake. Music for Art's sake. Music for Money. Music for image. Music for Fame. Music for Ego. Music to cure your mental trauma. Music for competition. Everybody does if for a variety of reasons.

Most guitarists (massively generalizing here so don't jump on me, I know it) DON'T start with Flamenco, don't start with the idea of satisying some internal urge to be creative. They pick up the guitar in High School or whatever to impress CHICKS. If they challenge themselves and take it seriously, the eventually get hooked on playing better and better.

I would hope that the majority of folks here play music for music's sake. Any other benefit should be secondary - and if you do get money fame or whatever from it, great.

Paco de Lucia, internationally famous or not, would still be doing what he does, I'd bet on it.

because i like so many different pieces from different guitarists EQUALLY.
that must be 20 or more different guitarists.

Haven't joined in so far because hard to limit. Sort of depends on my mood and what I'm practising. But here goes:

I could sign under a lot of top four lists on this thread but these are the first four that pop into my mind:

Serranito
Moraito
Paco Cepero

Someone mentioned Riqueni. He's definitely a favourite of mine, but like Vicente Amigo he sometimes gets a bit too sweet and sentimental for me. What inspires me a lot these days are solid accompanists like Paco Cortés and Antonio Carrion. You can hear them both on Diego Clavels recent discs.

On a side note. Anyone who doesn't use fretless bass or concert flute on their album gets a golden star!

dont be ashamed Ailsa lol we dont really talk about them that much...ofcourse it would be my pleasure...

EL Viejin, Jesus de Rosario and Ramon Jimenez...they all have only 1 solo album each so u cant go wrong...

Jesus de Rosario also pays on Guadianas albums i think...the first one i know for sure...

David Cereduella dosent have an solo album yet and you cant really see his full potenetial yet he does appear in Guadianas dvd ..Esencia Guadiana at casa patas.....theres an organ there that kind of ruins it...but thats not david's fault....hes done a few dvds (antonios canales torero) and a few accomp albums for singers but hasent done a solo album just yet...the day he does il be very very happy

anyway this is a litlle of an alegrias hes the main guitarist to the right

do you want me to put togheder a few sample audios in a thread tomarow from some of their albums ? might even do it now...

I can hear where a lot of your influence comes from Flo.

(I may be wrong, but I think you spent some time with the guy when he was Australia?)

I've got to admit, it's quite an experience NOT to see somebody performing on stage, or meeting backstage for a few words and a photograph...

But to meet the guy the next day when he's just in jeans and a tee-shirt or something and actually TALK.

And when he demonstrates some of the incredible stuff you heard the night before at the concert and here he is just showing it to you right in front of your face and making mistakes and laughing and slowing it down and repeating it ...

You suddenly realize that playing this stuff IS possible!

That the guy really IS human after all and needs a cup of coffee or to go to the toilet etc...

It makes it all the more real...

These kinda experiences leave a big mark on you ..much more than watching a guitar hero on DVD or being an audience member at a concert IMO.

totally and Aloysuis too...it was an experience ...but what influenced me even more deeply was seeing the kind of person he was so humble!!...ive never meet anyone so down to earth and nice ...he would play something and look at my face for approval or something ...almost as if to say..."this is all i have"

while i was foaming at the mouth

btw..that dancer from the guadiana dvd was here too..he came out with us too ..

Nice to see that some of you guys can focus in on certain players.

For me it changes constantly. Always has done regardless of the genre of music.

I'd find to easier to pin down certain artists during a 'certain period of their career' or by a particular recording/concert.

There seems to be too many variables. What mood I'm in. What country I'm living in or visiting.

One pattern I have noticed though, is that I generally prefer the earlier work of any artist/group.

yeah thats probably the most prepared and honest one ...well in most cases...some superstars can keep rising to the ocassion or reinventing themselfs...or going one better..

and some just do a second album cause its expected

but also theres some exceptions that go the other way...Nino de Pura...did 2 imo pretty crappy albums before he made one of my fav in 202...sounds like a compleatley diff guitarrist.. Pozo y caudal

Or because some businessman with no knowledge of music but has a MBA has signed them up and wants to make MORE money....lol

There's also a delicate balance with gifted technical players that they don't loose sight of the tune, the melody and start playing in such a way that makes it sound self indulgent.

You know, technique for the sake of technique. A good example of this were the post Van Halen Big Hair Heavy Metal Days of Neo Classical yada yada yada...whizz bang pop five million notes per solo....lol

Hey Ricardo,

Can you recommend some recordings! This weekend I found a copy of Manuel Marao & Gitanos de Jerez - Bularias.

This is great as my teacher is introducing me to bularias at the moment.

Any others you might suggest to help develop my ear?

You should get the DVD series "Rito y Geografia del Cante Flamenco" to see these guys in action with various singers. And search youtube of course!

Cepero-such a long list of great singers. La Perla de Cadiz. Festival Flamenco Gitano 1 really shows off Cepero accompanying some great singers like Maria Vargas and Camaron, some dance accomp, and he even sings some decent rumbas. As a bonus you get 2 guitar solos from Paco de Lucia live in 1969, one of my favorite flamenco discs.
Morao-the whole jerez line of singers. Seems very inspired with Terremoto.... and the son moraito with Terremoto jr. Moraito and son diego with Zambo, los moneos, de la Morena, etc etc. Now Jesus Mendez I like a lot for a young singer in jerez style.
Parrilla- La Paquera of course!!
Tomatito-live with camaron of course!! But things like his accomp of Zambo and Fernando de la morena on Paseo de los Castaños show his versitily to play for other styles of singers. He gets a good jerez aire going there in a bodega in Sanlucar.
Chicuelo-mainly his work with Poveda. Live video of his concerts with Duquende and Poveda are quite inspiring.
