Thickness gauge/calipers

I am in the market for thickness calipers, the long kind that you might use to measure top thickness before assembly.

Anyone know of a good source for a dial gauge or a pair that wont run me $130 usd lol?

anybody willing to part with theirs for less than 130 usd? lol

I guess I'll turn this thread into a "how to make a dial thickness caliper" thread lol.

I just bought a digital gauge from harbor freight for about 30usd. there's an analog one but it only has imperial measure and I personally have no desire to spend my time converting to mm from inches when checking a tops thickness lol.

I'll update as soon as i get the part!

There’s an adjustable magnetic base with an arm that goes with this indicator. It’s for automotive applications but should work for what you’re doing.

I’ve been dealing with HF for almost 20 years now. You can go to their site to find a local B&M store and if you can find a sale price for the indicator you can take the ad and your sales slip to the store and get some money back. You have a year from the date you purchased the item to do so.

I have a thickness gauge for tops and backs. It's called opposable thumb and index fingers. My mother gave it to me :)

well, pgh good call on that one

and mr estebananananananananananana your thumb and index fingers are alll the way out in california. unless you want to bring them with you all the way to chicago....

In any case, i build it, its rough and ready, and kinda wiggly, but it'll do! here she be

the [excuses]workmanship is subpar, i did it at 4 am running on little sleep fueled by caffeine[/excuses] but it does the job. im going to cut a new arm and double the thickness. perhaps this time i'll use the proper blade in my jigsaw instead of trying to cut thru 3/4 inch ply with the "fine" blade lol
