Intensive week long Flamenco Lessons??? 
Aloha,
This is Abe from Maui. My wife and I are sitting around thinking of ways to get in trouble next year for Vacation. What I am contemplating are this, I want to go to Spain and live out some Flamenco fascination fury, thus by visiting Specialty Flamenco Guitar shops, TAKING LESSONS, and hanging out really late at night in hopes of taking part in some late night bulerias, alegrias and Flamenco Partying. My wife is not a Flamenco Dancer and not an enthusiast, and she is used to "falling asleep" when I start playing Flamenco (Flamenco guitar relaxes her regardless that its a furious palo de bulerias), I am worried that she would get bored on a trip to Spain, due to my attention not focused with her, and instead focused on following the flamenco scene. (btw-she does share an interest in Flamenco, but mostly as a cool wife that is supportive of my dreams).
So here is my question- Is there a place in the US, where a flamenco artist would be teaching a seminar, or perhaps you would be interested in teaching a comprehensive private class, so that I could partake in intense Flamenco Guitar lessons, as well see some great shows like Paco or Vicente, or Flamenco Festival shows, Nunez, casares, Pitingo, ect? Bay area or New York or something??
I would rather not go to Spain yet, because of my skill level not being where I want it as well as my spanish not very good. However, I want to progress by experiences of Flamenco concerts and lessons, and realize that I have seen some amazing Flamenco talent in Montreal Canada and the US in the past, and would like to pursue more. What are your thoughts? maybe you're interested in teaching a seminar? I have seen that there are alot of Flamenco enthusiasts in New Mexico? Perhaps I could get away with traveling to some US or Mainland destinations like Canada or california or NY, and put off my trip to Spain? Any thoughts on this are welcome.
Please write back; If you are willing to entertain lessons, do you know of some concert Flamenco artists that are going to be visiting within 0-200 miles of your area that will be playing concerts? If so what time of the year is that usually around? or how do you think I should gauge the timing? (ex paco de lucia played 2 years ago in berkeley and it was amazing) I was thinking how cool it would be to incorporate another concert like that with some intensive Flamenco lessons over the course of a 5-10 days, and thus put off my trip to Spain for following the flamenco scene. New York? San Francisco? Montreal? New Mexico? Its all wide open, I was just wondering what your thoughts are on this?

Aloha MauiFlamenco,
I would narrow down the question. Its like a worldtrip where you are able to go to, and almost everywhere there will be somebody who can teach.

My second thought, go to spain...and luckily for your wife, Spain has more to offer than just flamenco. You are also not far away from other nice places to go to...at least in distance.

My third thought, you don't have to quallify for lessons. Even some spaniards have to start at an entry level.

So I would first find out what your main goal is for the both of you on the holiday, secondly try everything to convince her that Spain has it also...

Just my thoughts.

yeah, forget the States, go to Spain. One scenario- go to the Festival de Jerez in March, take classes with El Carbonero- (great for beginners,) see a bunch of fantastic shows - best performers in the world. Total immersion for 2 weeks.

Jerez is awash in foreigners at festival time, so the language is less of a problem then -- but you're better off giving Spanish some serious study anyway.

MauiFlamenco doesn't want to go to Spain yet so why not help him out, rather than say go to Spain? That is not what he wants to do!

When you are in Maui, Spain is quite far away.

I love Maui, and try to go at least once every two years! I go for the windsurfing, do you do that MauiFlamenco?

Anyways, although I have never gone but want to one day, I think the Annual Festival Flamenco Internacional de Alburquerque would be a good bet. Not sure what will happen in 2010, in 2009 it was cancelled. I know of a dancer that is very good that went to Jerez regularly, she wants to try Alburquerque now.

I rode a motorcycle once through New Mexico, it was pretty beatiful. I plan to re-live that experience soon.

I've kind of had a similar wish myself. I often wonder if someone would be willing to put together something similar to this:

(laughing) she is cool, and she enjoys flamenco,and she wants to go to Spain, but I am sure that she doesn't want to sit around waiting for hours on a mutual vacation while I am taking lessons. She is an amazingly supportive wife, and I definitely don't want to bring her to spain so that she can go aimlessly walkabout in a country of which she doesn't speak Spanish. I guess you could only understand my concerns, if you are married or have a significant other? Its about safety, and my enthusiasm towards ensuring that she enjoys her vacation as much as mine.

Aloha cathulu,
Thanks for backing me up, I do speak spanish but not very fluent, and as for your comment, thanks. I want to make my experience in spain incredible, and I feel if I go there now, that it would be pre-mature. So alternatively, looking for US destinations or mainland destinations.
As for windsurfing in Maui. On weekends I play guitar all day til 2pm, and then I go windsurfing for the rest of the afternoon.

Well I am sorry about my miss understanding, but you said you want to go on holiday and take intensive lessons when the BOTH of you are on holiday, but you don't want to leave her alone???

I've had this experience with my wife. She is also cool BUT, the problem isn't really with the lessons. The problem comes because you'll want to practice between lessons.
Maybe your wife could take some lessons herself, maybe spanish lessons, or spanish cuisine??
Many of the flamenco schools also teach Spanish lessons etc as well as Flamenco.

Yeah, I have been in your situation actually. When we were in Seville and I met my girlfriend after my lesson she would sometimes be in a bad mood from walking around or spending hours in the Corte Ingles or trying to get our laundry done

I once had a student live with me for a month just to hang out and catch me around the house for a quick lesson or advice, and hang out every night doing flamenco parties after my gigs with myself and friends.

my wife IS a flamenco dancer, and like yours, actually likes to go to bed early too. So our wives could hang out and go to sleep early while we go out and do juerga.

But I can guarantee you my wife will try to let your's know my way if life is a bad influence on you.

We have a flamenco festival in the area January to February.

what the hell kind of woman have you got as a girlfriend?!

mine would love to spend hours shopping, i could probably leave her in a store like that for a week and she'd come out happy!

I saw the ads for February performances at Lisner. What's going on in January?

Also who do you think is going to be the most interesting performer out of the 5 at Lisner?

yeah just february this year. Sorry they dont' give any info on guitarists or singers, so I can't really say. None of the dancers appeal to me unfortunately. Maria Pages is famous for the peteneras in Saura's Flamenco movie. I think this year I won't beable to see any concerts.

Why not, constraints or just nothing special to see?

I watched one of the videos on Lisner's website and they had a few gutar players acoompanying that sounded good but but focus is obvisouly on dance, not guitar.

Aloha Abe,

I live on Maui! I Danced Flamenco for many years when I was younger. My mother was a professional Flamenco dancer who danced all over the world and lived in Spain for many years too. My mom is coming to visit in January and I was planning on reveiwing with her some of the dances that I once learned. She still teaches in the SF BayArea, Flamenco lessons. She doesn't play guitar(plays the piano) but she sings, plays the castenettes, and does the palmas.
Would you maybe want to get together and play some of the some of the music for the dances? She loves to talk story too.....Especially about Flamenco and the different companies she's danced with in Spain. She may be able to give you some valuable information you could use when you visit Spain.
My Father's side of the family lives in Southern Spain, La Carolina, Province of Jaen. We went for a visit several years ago. What a beautiful place full of rich culture. Let me know if this interest you and I'll e-mail you my info!

I have never played for a dancer, which is why I crave to go to spain to be thrown in the mix for a beginner group or something. I have been a closeted Flamenco Guitarist for 5 years, and I have scattered my training in this order, technique, theory, Solea, Tarantas, and then realized that I had zero abilities in obtaining the compas for Bulerias. I have been working with Bulerias compas for the past year, which has been a fun and challenging practice.
I would love to be included with anything on Maui that has to do with Flamenco. My email is abegalan@aol.com. I am very intimidated with the idea of playing for a Dancer, but I am also willing to take a leap of faith and do my best. Thank you very much for the invite, I accept on the condition that you understand this is a completely out of the ordinary experience for me. Exciting!
