Bach Bolero

I cant help feeling that all these modern flamenco composers who have been writing Boleros over that last few years are basing their ideas on much older music. I have been fiddling around with some Bach over the summer and decided to post some tabs as exercises and ideas.

Ok its not flamenco but still good to get your fingers round and great left hand exercise. This is Bachs Air on a G string for solo guitar. Its based on the Ivor Moraints transcription with a few modifications. I have made a nice big tab as I have found most versions very difficult to read.

Here is page 1

This can be tackled by intermediate players. The theme repeats twice. It is ideal to learn for a wedding march or part of any religous service. Tune that 6th string to D and play slowly.

Now if you are feeling really brave then you can try the second part.
I would suggest this is for more advanced players. If you are not at this level yet then dont worry, the first part works well on its own. The are some good stretches and position jumps on the neck. Some of the fingering seems weird initially but it works out best overall.

For the really advanced players this can all be extrapolated into a Bach Bolero with lots of room for improvisation. This will really keep you busy over the winter months.

Good luck. Pimientito

Well the original comes from Bachs orchestral suite number 3 which is a chamber piece with many parts. This guitar solo kind of splits the work into melody and bass to make it playable. However Air on the G string is a very popular piece of music that has been recorded countless times in countless ways so you should have no problem finding it. I dont have time to record it and upload the solo right now but it is faithful to the score.

I have found a guitar pro tab on the internet. Now it makes more sense. Of course i know this piece, but just by playing whats in the tabs, some notes didnt fit in mind. I still think there are some weird atonal notes, like F? But it makes more sense to me now!
