leo, cante challenge ends 31st sept. But i guess there will be one week or so "aftertalk", lol. We can also add 3 weeks. So far 2 people responded. Is anybody strikingly against it???

oh, well in that case, it doesn't really matter when we end it since we'll be far away enough from the cante challenge. 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 20 years, doesn't matter to me. i just dont want you guys to get too good so i can win. lol.

RE: Intermediate Challenge??? (in reply to at_leo_87

while i don't regret entering the challenge, this piece is pretty beyond my skill set and it has been taking all of my practice time at the expense of most everything else.

what i've really gained from this, besides dealing with all the syncopation, is that i know now how to tackle, deconstruct and attack a complicated piece.

so i am enjoying the challenge and will be uploading something even though it might be at 80bpm!

My biggest problem is playing to the backing tracks. I have difficulty following where the "1" is. If it was a standard drum kit it'd be easier, but trying to follow along with people beating on tables with weird syncopation is tough.

I'm having trouble with the last two compases Chicuelo is playing. I liked better the original definition of playing the two falsetas and improvising some compases in between.

btw, that is not to say the rest of the piece is trouble free... ;(

it might be at 80bpm!

Did we ever define a minimum bpm?

nope. we should just play at whatever speed we're comfortable with. however, we should all use a compas loop. i have a variety of speeds so just ask. or check out florian's compas thread and create your own.

we still have about one month?

I am pulling out of this challenge. One week left and still miles to go for me. I'm still struggling with basic things so whatever I would be able to submit is not even worth the time for critique. I will however finish this on my own time and submit for feedback.

Have learned lots of things with this challenge, most importantly I think was improving the way I practice and attack a piece. And interestingly, I enjoy listening to Pepe more than Chicuelo but I really enjoyed playing Chicuelo's piece way more than Pepe's.

Time to pile on the scorn! I don't care; it's actually a great relief to put this piece to bed for the moment and play other things.

whoa, what, one week left? the deadline is the 26th! anyways, do what you must. the important thing is that by the end we all learn something from this challenge.

Sorry guys, I dropped the ball on this one. I've been playing for dance classes and taking lessons regularly since July. Between that and work, there just wasn't enough time

Best of luck to the challengers. Looking forward to hearing your entries!

Intermediate Challenge!!! Important ... (in reply to beno

Thanks to what we learned from the cante competition and to GJ's suggestions, we WILL try a new judging method. This is important so please read.

****Judging Method:****
Once the deadline for entry submission has passed, Ailsa will post all the attempts up for review.

All judges will send their scores and comments to Ailsa, instead of posting them directly on to the thread.

Each contestant will also send their scores to Ailsa by email. The contestant will not judge himself for obvious reasons.

A 75/25 relation will be implemented. That means the judges' results will be multiplied by 3, before adding them to the challengers votes. In the end, we count both scores together and divide by two.

Ailsa will then post all the scores and comment once the deadline for judging has passed or until she has received all judge's and challenger's scores.

***Please email your attempts to Ailsa.

flamencoguitarcourse@yahoo.co.uk

This is important: Be sure to include your user name so she knows who you are and also your code name (pick a type of wood for your code name.) I've gotten so many people sending me files without saying a darn thing. Very irritating.

Thank you Ailsa!

Intermediate Challenge, judging meth... (in reply to beno

Code names: please choose a type of wood for your code names.

Recording:
-everything must be done in one take. no punching in/editing.
-eq, reverb, stuff like that are okay.
-a compas loop must be used. deniz provided us with a few when we downloaded the song. there are additional ones that i uploaded. links are on the first page.

so is everyone okay with the judging method? i thought it was a good idea at first but i'm worried that it'll really hold things up. we already have 11 judges. and it's already going to take some time for them to do their thing. there are many contestants and if each one of us has to judge as well, it just might take a really long time. and i don't want to make things more difficult than it has to be for ailsa.

so if it's okay with everyone, i'd like to revert back to the old method, except the judges will still email ailsa their scores and comments. just no contestants judging.

totally up to you guys.

RE: Intermediate Challenge, judging ... (in reply to at_leo_87

Well it was clear from the beginning that we would have alot of judges which is a good thing. It wont take too much time, judging deadline is one week after upload of mp3s for both judges and challengers. As we spoked the deadline is the same for both, challengers will be given the same time, not more.
Send them to Ailsa, i can do the neccessary PC-work of counting everything together. That will take max 1 day for me. Depends on how fast i receive the judgings ;) if i get all judgings within 4 days, i can release the results the 5th day.
Anybody who has no time to judge, its no problem, we have enough judges. But remember you'll loose your vote.
So it basically depends on the judgings' deadline how long you want it to take.

edit: or send your judgings directly to me (denku@web.de) instead of Ailsa coz otherwise she will have to forward them to me which will delay everything just unneccessarily. I will publish every judgment with the name so every judge can check that i have done everything correctly.

RE: Intermediate Challenge, judging ... (in reply to XXX

thought i better let you guys know... I'm not gonna be doing this challenge! decided a long time ago but forgot to mention it.

I'm not sure what it is but I don't seem to like having a deadline or target when playing/practicing. Other challenges that I thought I may get involved in have had the same end! I think i just like to play what i feel like from day to day and feeling a pressure to play a certain piece just doesn't work for me.

sorry guys and good luck to the rest of you!

I'm also dropping out but I do plan on posting this piece sometime later this year. I just need more time to get it to a comfortable and faster level.

Also, I have discovered that I need to work on playing with palmas tracks.

Best of luck to everyone. Can't wait to hear the entries!

Doug

Ahh, don't drop out!.. you'll leave me all by myself against people who actually know how to play this stuff! Ideally I'd need another 6 months to get this thing off the ground, but I'll record and sumbit. I really like the piece.. two distinct styles in one

Deniz it's not the amount of work that bothers me, it's that it won't be fair if some challengers views are counted but not others. And as we know from our experience some people say they are going to comment but then just don't have time.

It's your challenge so not my decision. I just have a few concerns about it.

Deniz,

Can you post an update of who are the final contestants and who are the final judges?

I've lost track here.

cheers,

RE: Intermediate Challenge, judging ... (in reply to Ailsa

Its the challengers decision if he judges, not ours. This was created to give the challengers a voice, if they dont use it, what can we do? And one week is really enough to listen to 5-10 mp3s... we are all heavy music consumers, especially the guitarists here. Besides, have in mind that the challengers votes only make 25% of the whole score. We have almost 20 judges... there can always be time issues, but regarding the number of judges it wont effect the result too much imo.

Well if anybody has an opinion (maybe you know more than i Ailsa) i would like to have this discussed. It was stated one (or more) month(s) ago and noone seemed to care, or at least nobody was against it.

Good questions Ron
Everybody on the judges list (first page) is a judge, including all challengers.
Challengers are all on the challengers list, minus people that dropped out (i guess leo will update his post accordingly).

Thanks Deniz!

That was a great help.

What I meant was an updated table.

BTW...If anybody can play that, then I'll be amazed!
IMO even Jason or Ricardo would have to be in top form and warmed up to pull those falsetas off!

Still, we'll see....

cheers,

OK man, thanks!

I think it might be a good idea to send a reminder to everyone involved, so we are not all left hanging around as usual.

Maybe the Challenge Admin should have a "confirm" check on everybody, say 3 days before each challenge?

Wow...I have those falsetas playing right now!

Rather "youz" than me!

But we'll see.
I've been amazed many times by folk on this Forum.

cheers,

Ron
