Holes at the bridge

Hi, i recently saw a guitar that seemed to have "big" holes. With holes i mean the ones at the bridge where the strings go through, on both sides. It seemed to me that the pressure of the strings had caused the holes to grow "upwards", cutting through the wood of the bridge. I wasnt shure if this is normal, and if not, if this is easy or inexpensive to fix for a luthier?

well the charge depends on the luthier i guess. but it is relatively easy to solve the holes can be filled by gluing in some rose wood then the they can be re drilled using a long drill bit! no problem the whole tie block can be replaced also but its best to leave it as it is really.

On that point, is there anything you can do to protect the top of the tie block from the strings if you have a 'naked' one that doesn't have a bone top or decoration? (Yep, it's a cheap guitar). Is it possible to buy something like that or do bridges usually just come 'as is'?

i think with that one you will just have to be inventive. just put something hard wearing on top of it. you could even get a bit of bone and glue it on a nice big slab of bone actually looks quite nice on the tie block.
