Are you a Terrorist?

In the wake of the recent arrests of suspected Al Qaeda operatives posing as students here in the UK, I have just heard that one of the questions on the UK Visa application form asks "Are you a Terrorist or not".
"If the answer is YES, then please fill in details in the box provided".

Now I see why the Civil Service top positions are staffed by ex Public School, ex Oxford and Cambridge graduates and why we must pay them colossal salaries and pensions, or we'll lose the cream of the talent to other countries.

Mind you....I was rather surprised on being handed a "landing card" to fill in on my first flight to the United States, which asked...

"Do you intend in any way, to protest against, disrupt, undermine, subjugate or otherwise attempt to overthrow the Government of the United States?"

Apparently, one English writer and wag (Evelyn Waugh) wrote down...

"Sole purpose of visit"

....and was detained for a week by the Authorities.

cheers,

Ron

Actually my father wanted a visa for USA couple of months ago, and he wrote something very negative , and he got his Visa without any problem. Mind you, he is IRANIAN!

I guess you are more suspicious when you write something like " NOOOO....i am iranian but i love Bush, i love USA" etc.... LOL

RE: Are you a Terrorist? (in reply to Ron.M

Shortly after 9/11, Iranian filmmaker, Abbas Kiarostami was denied entry into the U.S., where he had been invited to attend the New York Film Festival.

Now, he had already been in the U.S. several times before, attending other festivals during the 90s, and he didn't blow anybody up then.

And his films are very apolitical, and are definitely not controversial or inflammatory in any way (To western audiences, at least. His films have frequently been banned in his own country, partly for being "too western"!).

Kiarostami is about as known and respected a name in world cinema as you can get, so why the State Department couldn't spend five minutes figuring that out and avoiding the embarrassment of making us look like complete dipshits is beyond me.

Apparently one M.Palin said "Well, it's not the SOLE purpose of my visit..." which didn't go down at all well either

The scariest thing for those "Authorities" is a sense of humour.

By the way, Mahmoud and Ahmed...oops, sorry, I mean 'Ron' and 'Simon'....this thread has attracted an advertisement for a 'Firearms Training Institute' - does this mean we're in a 'bad internet neighbourhood' now? Perhaps we should tell them this is a flamenco forum, we don't do guns, just knives.

RE: Are you a Terrorist? (in reply to Ron.M

A few years ago I was going through security at the airport and they found a 2mm allen wrench in my backpack. They confiscated it. I asked why and was told that it could be used to either dismantle the airplane or as a weapon. My response (not the brightest) was if I can take apart the plane with a 2mm allen wrench then we're all pretty well ...... and furthermore I would take my shoe off and club someone with it before I went after them with an allen wrench.

My wife was not pleased but I guess the security people figured she would keep me in line after that.

Before 911 I flew to San Antonio for the GFA. I took a bunch of tools with me in case I needed to work on a guitar. In my carry on case I had chisels, knives, planes, files etc.. Security took the time to ask me why I had these things. I told them and they said "Oh, Ok" My how things have changed.

My 78 year-old 5'2" grandmother was pulled up for taking her vintage fruit/cheese knife in her carry-on, on the well-used terrorist route from mainland Australia to Tasmania. It was probably the Urban Guerilla Handbook under her arm that tipped them off, though

Well, I hear that the suspected students have now been released, since thorough Police investigation has failed to find a shred of evidence against them.

But they are going to be pulled out of uni and college and deported anyway, even though their visas are in order.

This seems a bit like sour grapes or spite, since the "Intelligence/Security" branch of the Police have been screwing up a lot in public.

Surely if action can be taken against you simply because the Police don't like the look of you, then we are going down a dangerous route?

Since the Authorities can now monitor all my email and computer communications including this, if you don't hear from me in a while, you'll know I've been picked up.

cheers,

Ron

Ron, perhaps you should discreetly dispose of the old Tom MacTito wig - we'd hate to lose you!

Nice one.

A few years ago at high-security Exeter airport they took away a very small pair of scissors with blunted tips that was part of my nail-repair kit for cutting silk, and dropped them in the garbage.

Then at mealtime on the plane I was given a plastic knife - okay, clearly harmless - and a solid steel fork which (in the hands of a demented diner) could easily be a deadly weapon. Duh.

Perhaps you could get into the Guiness Book of Records for being the fastest to take a Boeing 747 apart with a 2mm Allen wrench.

Would maybe make good Reality TV.

cheers,

Ron
