Alright like I mentioned before, I'm not entering this challenge but thought I'd bring this thread back to life ..I also needed a break from doing my stupid taxes this year (OUCH!) I can't believe how much I pay uncle Sam every year..oh well..anyway I learned the notes yesterday and decided to give this a spin...its a slow version and probably not that accurate..I actually didn't know that Jason made a detailed video explanation of the falseta!! it would've made the past two days easier!

I recorded it with headphones on listening to Jason's slow version in compas cause it will take more practice to play it fast with aire, soniquete etc and I don't have a buleria compas track that is under 190 bpm. However, I'm convinced only Jason can play this at that fast pace.

There are a lot of things in there that are really played in his own style. I would've probably been disqualified anyway for including the last alzapua part that Jason taught me awhile ago oh well...its definitely a challenge to learn so maybe I can play it up to speed soon

Anyhow, anyone that is thinking of learning it GO FOR IT! You have almost 2 1/2 months to learn it and get a free one year membership WOW! go..go..go! Jason is an awesome teacher!

Not bad DonS. A couple of wrong notes, but no big deal. I remember that alzapua lick at the end you put in. I haven't played that one in a very long time. I doubt it would get you disqualified if you were to enter.

Thanks guys..I went out of town yesterday for work and tried playing the falseta again today and found my fingers had an easier time remembering it and could play it much faster.

Ricardo...I added that short alzapua part since its Jason's lick sort of dedication

Jason...yeah man thats a great alzapua lick that I learned like 9 years ago from you..wow time flies. I will check out the detailed version video that you made and make the corrections. I did hear some notes that you don't play on the faster video that are on the slower video ( I know this is common with falsetas as you sort of add or deduct the little things depending on speed, tempo and creating aire). Also not saying that I would win this challenge but I think someone else would benefit more from the free one year membership than I would ..also cause I'm afraid I won't have the time to get on your site as much as I'd like to. Time its always the problem nowadays. remember those days of practicing for hours and hours?...those were the days

Good luck to everyone doing this challenge..and it is definitely CHALLENGING!

Actually the slow and fast versions of this are the same performance. I slow the videoed down digitally now, so that the performances in the lessons are consistent. Thanks for reminding me of that alzapua lick.

Good to know. But 1-3 random compases at the beginning and the end are ok, as you said in one of the videos no? Your compases are very nice, but to have a bit individuality outside of the falseta and laamada,. I would like to play compas as I usually do.
I gt trough the falseta yesterday at slow speed. Now Im building up tempo like Don. I think I´m perfectly in time. Man.. Im happyly waiting for my final playing. And of course for the other videos.

Ahh.. I LOVE the challenges! They really get my on the guitar almost every day. Thank you Jason, and of course Florian for the initial idea.

Here is a video of the student that I composed the falseta for. This is at the end of the second lesson on the falseta. The first lesson he got the notes memorized the second one we worked on rhythm. I missed 2 weeks with him because I was sick with a bad cold.

Roberto is a real pleasure to teach and works very hard on all aspects of his playing. He has come a very long way in the 2 years he has studied with me. The biggest challenge for him has been rhythm. He of course still has a lot to learn, but he is doing great and I am very proud of him. Now if I could just conviince him to grow his nails!

I must mention Roberto's classical guitar teacher as well. Gyorgy Vass has really done a fantastic job with roberto in regards to his classical studies.

Something that I have mentioned many times to students of all ages..... If we approach playing with the innocence and engergy of a child, we can overcome many of the technical issues by simply accomplishing the task before us with out regard for how difficult something is.

This Kid is amazing Jason. Lots of talent for sure (and full of energy which has to be leaded in the right direction)
If he keeps playing and practicing like that, he will be a great and complete guitarist soon in few years.

In the videos I make for him to take home and study, he learns the material pretty fast and then watches the "wierd stuff" over and over with his little brother like a TV show. It has become a tradition for us to always get a little goofy in each lesson. It is important for me that Roberto doesn't miss out on being a kid just because of his exceptional talent. It was one of the things I had to be sure of before I agreed to accept him as my student.

Another interesting thing about Roberto is that he is totally nuts about plants and in particulr cactus. His knowledge of plants and cactus is astounding and he is equally if not more passionate about botany than music and flamenco.

Wow that kid is a prodigy! I remember hearing about him at Casa Montalvo guitars a few years ago when he was 7 or 8. Kid is going to be monster at 15.. I attended a concert of Javier Conde playing with his dad in Jerez when he was 15 what a talent! It must be rewarding to teach a young kid..and for him to absorb such difficult falsetas so quickly. I know some guys in their late 20's that won't be able to able to absorb half of that falseta because like you said "they think" it is difficult to begin with. You are dead on with that because we older guys tend to shy away from the harder stuff. I remember the first thing I learned on flamenco guitar was "Callejon de la Luna" by Vicente back in the early 90's. At the time I didn't know it was difficult, I just wanted to learn it..it took me awhile but I did it. Nowadays, I would probably think differently LOL..whats the saying again? "the more you understand the less you know"

Thats indeed a big problem (and a good advice from Jason).
There is so much (too much) going on in your brain when you get older.
You overanalyze everything, want to be sure that everything is perfect, are feared to do something wrong, underestimate your abilities, and all this stuff is happening in your brain at the same time when your fingers are moving over the fretboard. Conclusion is that you play crap.

Less brain, more heart.
Unfortunatley thats easier said than done.
And if you succeed to do that today, tomorrow you do the same "mistake" again.

Many artists use meditation to help focus. I could see how a discipline like meditation could be very helpful.

Roberto is a normal 10 year old aside from playing guitar. He is silly, rides bikes, climbs trees, tries to eat as much candy as possible etc... Our many wandering thoughts change as we get older, but for the most part and maybe even to a greater degree, children have a swarm of ideas and questions in the mind at any given time. The difference is with Roberto is that when he begins to play he becomes focused on making it a priority. I do the same after a couple of cold beers.

Another thing about Roberto is that when he makes a mistake he doesn't get upset with himself. I make him aware of the mistake and he simply corrects the error the best he can. At the beginning of this one-hour class, he played the falseta COMPLETELY out of compas. I had to simply mention that his "guess" at the rhythm was incorrect.
I played the falseta several times while he played tapado compas (role reversal). By having him "measure the compas" by using tapado, he could begin to feel the falseta in his hands. I would urge all of you having difficulty with rhythm to use this technique for learning. It of course requires that you are able first to play tapado accurately. In my experience it works well to get students to play in compas better.

I am sure that you as a teacher have found it to be the case with most of your students. I learn so much from all my students. Teaching is a gift. I feel that way about all of my students....... except for DonS. He was a horrible student.

He is for sure really good. Congratulations to him! He hopefully gets through the pubertaet without quitting guitar. He could become an excellent player.

Many performers use various forms of seccanol, or qualudes to treat stage fright, calm the brain and body after intense practice or performing, and to put their personna in the right place when performing. I reccomend it. It works well and is part and parcel to being a performer. And that's all I'm going to say!

Wicked! Jason, you are the man and Roberto is... well, the kid! Super cool video, what enthusiasm and energy! I was thinking it would be really ironic and funny if when you asked him what he thought about the falseta he said something like "to be honest it's kinda junk" or something, after showing that he's put time in to master it. haha

I wonder how he got in to flamenco so young... So there are young people in to it in North America! Coooo....
