@Duende

Eller hur! Någon borde hämta honom och hans ensemble med en stor kran och fira ner dem på södra teatern (sen hämta dig med kranen och fira ner dig på en bra sittplats)

Haven't spotted any Vicente ads here sadly.. And I just can't make it to Helsinki on that date. I would love to see the show.

(Sorry for going off topic)
I'm cheering for all of you in the beginner challenge!

I posted my recording yesterday. The work is over, now is just waiting what the judges will say. Since this is my first "public" playing I feel quite exited, littlebit like waiting for christmas ;)

Swedish is a cool language! It always reminds me on Mos Eisley Bar in Star Wars where all these aliens are. Do they talk Swedish?

Interesting, you could make a rude sentence in Glasgwegian out of those words..

Dig dem! Och fira honom hur bra!

cheers,

Would it be terribly naughty to record the piece in a different key?

Not really for ease of playing, I just think it sounds nice.

I'm guessing it should really be the same as the original for the sake of judging, fairness, sportsmanship etc etc.

You mean with a capo? Err.... yes, I would say it needs to be without capo so everyone is doing the same.

Errr, umm, someone I may or may not know may (or may not) have already recorded with a capo, so let's not make this a rule... okay? :-)

RE: Challenge, Beginners Thread (in reply to alex_lord

Oh dear. Well the thing is I didn't record with a capo because I - perhaps wrongly - assumed that it should be played in the same key as the original. And had I played with a capo I'm pretty certain I could have got it cleaner than I did because the stretches would not be as great. So does that mean I am at an unfair disadvantage?

Oh well too late now. I guess the point of the challenge is to be encouraged to practise something new and play to the best of your ability. I've done that, so if my entry isn't as good as it could have been with a capo I'll have to live with that.

Yikes. It didn't even cross my mind, which was far too preoccupied with keeping compas anyway. My apologies.

There's still time to re-record it in the correct key

good point..my apologies i should have perhaps made a point of mentioning it..but i didnt think about it much until just now reading you guys talk about it...(sorry we still learning how to best and fairest do this challenges)

I didnt really care but its good point, expecially in the beginner section where there is so many different levels of beginners..you have a certain advantage with a capo not only in comfort but in sound too..it will unfairly make your audio stand out for reasons other than your playing..

if it can be helped we dont want anything other than your playing to be different as much as possible ( for the purpose of accurateley scoring your effort in comparasent to others in your group)..i realize different microphones and guitars make that impossible but the stuff that can be helped...eg. capo, too much reverb, too much compression..etc..stuff like that can be cut out..

please try to do it in the same key as the original..if possible...if you need it i will give you a one day extra extenshion

Thans el_flaco. Im happy its over...the practice, the playing of this piece, the recording. It was very good to focus long time to one thing, figure out the compas as well as possible, try not to be slobby, listen the accents on the record, try to get the feeling, recording. All this has given a me new perspective to my practice routines. This must be the most accurate listening and playing work I have done by far (not that it would show on my recording, but I did my best).
Good luck with your recording.

I'm on the same lines with florian on the capo thing. If possible, it would be good to do it without. Thats how the pieces would be the most comparatable(is that even a word ) But if you have no change to re-record it, better to entry with that than with nothing.

No worries. I'll try to rerecord it tomorrow evening without the capo. I may need a one or two hour extension ;-)

Man... this recording biz is tough, I think I'd make less mistakes playing in front of everyone than I do by myself in front of my computer

How about we deduct points for use of the capo? Say 2 points per fret, so a capo at the 3rd fret is -6 points.
If you're prepared to take the hit you can record with a capo?

I'm joking, honest - and I agree it would be best if possible that they are all in the same key.
Actually it didn't occur to me either and I did almost all of my practice with a capo till I played the original again the other day and realised it was sans capo (realised on a conscious level at least - I had perhaps sub-consciously acknowledged something wasn't quite right )

Not recorded my effort yet, but I'll be doing so later this afternoon.

Decided not to use the capo, as its not fair on everyone else. Like I said, not because I think it makes it any easier, but I prefer the sound - thus a judge may also prefer the sound and that makes it unfair.

Time to get practicing - I might be ready by midnight !

NB - I was planning on using a loop as a backing to play over - does anyone have any objections to this? Have you all recorded with one or have you played unaccompanied?

Well that's handy - do you know what speed the original is?

73bpm sound about right?

I'd hate to play it faster than I have to.

So your anonymous recording is the one with the loop right?

Even if it was anonymous you'd tell it was mine by the playing.

Only...8 1/2 hours left....

i posted a loop on the first page..if you like it use it if not feel free to use another

quote:

Heres a loop you can use approx the same speed ...if you use this and play it correctly to it you would infact get more swing then the original audio..

this is the exact same legth as your challenge

You can chose to use this in your final upload or do it without...up to you guys

LOOP

I think more like 86bpm... and I think the slowed one is somewhere in the 60's

Hehe, no chance. 86 indeed.

Not going to get this done now anyway as my wrist is proper aching. Damaged it a while back so it can't take over-playing and I don't like to keep going once it starts to hurt.

Pretty gutted though as I was really hoping I'd get this done.

LOL! You truly are multilingual.

Not arrogant in the least, I was humbled by the last couple of compases, so I was allowing for the 1000 takes it took me to be happy enough with my original capoed recording. Oh well, I think I've got this thing more or less where I want it... now if only my guitar sounded half decent without a capo!

A brilliant idea, which I will gladly second, now that I've recorded without a capo...

Oh man!! the power was out over here for a while today.
I thought I would never be able to record.

I finally was able to record tonight and submit it.

What a relief.

Not going to get this done now anyway as my wrist is proper aching. ...
Pretty gutted though as I was really hoping I'd get this done.

My wrists were a bit sore by the time I got finished with the challenge, and my fingers had stopped working properly by that time too
I really wanted to do well with this... I listened to the MP3 on repeat on my headphones at work... I went for a cheeky strum at music shops in my lunch hour... I had strange dreams of walking around Granada while Flo followed me around saying "12, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6..."
The disheartening thing for me was after all the listening, learning and practice, when I hit the 'record' button, nerves got the better of me and the technique went out the window, so, in an attempt to get a take without mistakes in it, I had to settle for one with no feel, poor compas and rubbish technique
I hate doing things I'm not happy with so it was tough for me to upload my entry but I had to go through with it out of respect for the people who organised the challenge and also for the other entrants.
But, on the bright side, even though I'm only just starting to learn, I know I'm much more capable than my upload would suggest. I should have been ready to record a week earlier and recorded a few takes each day rather than having to do it on deadline day, so it's my fault for not knuckling down when the challenge was announced.

Props to all the other challengers for having a go! This was quite a tough thing to do and the judges have acknowledged that. Like uncle Flo says, we are all winners just for entering!
