Hi dozo, the bars are numbered ok ? Beat one of bar 8 (last bar of page 1) the last note is printed as F when in fact Senor Herrero is playing G# which is actually easier to play.

Hi takitaka, okay I've worked it out at last You're referring to the original version from the book and I'm looking at Flo's version (where it's at the bottom of page 2, bar 18!)

cheers!

sorry guys if theres any descreptencies in the tab..i looked over it in a hurry since had 2 challenges to get on the way fast before momentum was lost...i assumed since its the original book there shouldnt be any problems..

rithm sometimes its written weridly in flamenco i have noticed..and not always exactly as in the audios

i had the book and assumed it was right...someone also shared a proper printed version on the first pages, check it against that..i dont know why mine its hand written..but it has the herrero signature so it is done by him..

So what are we supposed to be playing? I've learnt the handwritten version that Flo posted. Is that OK or do we have to learn some changes now?

Yeah, I've been learning that one too and I'm going to stick with it. Anyway I feel the handwritten nature lends authenticity to the music...

(I hope so, something has to!)

RE: Challenge, Beginners Thread (in reply to domzo

Its fine guys , whatever you learned use that.. we will be looking for compas, swing..understanding of the way it should feel etc..this is more about buleria then the exact piece strum for strum...the peticular strumming is just a reference so that you dont have to think of one yourself theres houndreds of ways u could play the same things...

so it dosent matter if u do a strum instead of a tap etc...i am not going to check it against the original for every tap and strum..i am just going to listen to it and see how it makes me feel..unles you do copy the original exactly and its obvious to me...then i will listen to it with that in mind..looking to see how succesful you were..

the correct feel will take you further than using the correct finger to strum it not as good... in my score anyways

if you get the correct feel and the correct strumming...(any of the 2 versions) well thats a great plus obviously

the general rule...what comes out is what matters ..not what was used to achive it

however since this is a beginner challenge and some might not be as experienced at chosing the strumming yourselfs to achive what we need the tab was uploaded as a guideline..so that its all there for you

RE: Challenge, Beginners Thread (in reply to takitaka

hm, do i have to officially enter? well i guess this is me throwing my hat into the ring.

though i've been playing for a while, i'm a true beginner as this is the first bulerias i've learned. i've been focused on technique so compas and swing have been completely absent from my skill set.

i've already learned so much from practicing this exercise so that is more satisfying to me than anything. looking more towards the feedback on my playing than on the chance to win prizes.

and since my photography business is slower than hell right now, i've had so much time to practice!

can't wait to hear all the entries.

Oh man, I am seriously late to this party. In all honesty I don't know what level I am at, but after looking at the tab, I think I can get this down by the deadline.

So, count me in, if it's not too late to join :-)

RE: Challenge, Beginners Thread (in reply to takitaka

Heh I've totally neglected practice for the last couple of days, so picked it up again tonight.

Florian - it seems like (especially on the slow version, because I've been concentrating on that one) you're not playing some beats at all even though they're tabbed out.

ie - 2nd beat 'bar' 11 on your handwritten tab - so 2nd beat of the 3rd compas

Is this just a conventional thing so give the piece a bit more space and emphasise beat 3 a bit more? Clearly I've been playing what you've written, but it seems like you interpret it slightly differently so it various the dynamics of the piece a bit, and it sounds less 'cluttered'.

Just seeking some guidance to try and make it sound a bit more authentic and not as though it's just an exercise.

Florian,

Just want to make sure. Is it at the end of the day of March 2nd, midnight, that we need to submit our files?

Thanks

I think you're definitely not a beginner if you can get this down in 3 or 4 days!

I think the track is the original one from the book with this exercise and Flo has just done the counting over the top of it for our benefit, but yeah, some beats are definitely de-emphasized compared to the TABs...

1st page of the thread says 'All the Entries to be emailed here at least one day before the deadline', which would make the deadline effectively March 1
So I hope none of us have plans for the weekend

Hi Sam ..the slow version is exactly the same audio only slowed down in transcriber..i am not playing it...so if its in the original it should be there..

U can interpret it different if you are confident...as mentioned in the intermediate, we are looking for compas, rithm, swing, aire, understanding of how this should feel..etc..the tab and audio is a reference point...u can do it exactly as it is or slightly different as long as you capture the feeling..

well you can submit them until then but no more submissions will be accepted after that..

ideally that would be good, it would help us get organised and give us some time to rename them and upload em...but end of March 2nd..should be ok

RE: Challenge, Beginners Thread (in reply to takitaka

Hello everyone,
I've been reading your most helpful forum for some time now, but havent posted anything before. I thought it would be nice to participate to the challange.
I was first trying to workout the intermediate challenge, but just couldn make the picado at all so I think the beginners challenge suits me better.
I've been playing flamenco soon two years so I'm not completely a beginner, but I dont feel fully a intermediate either. I can play somehow the basics of the usual palos and have trained little of all the basic techniques of flamenco guitar, but they still need to have much more practice.
So if its ok, you can count me in.
- Aleksi

Thanks Florian.
I have been working with it everyday for past week. I've tried recording also. I havent been recording my self before so its very nice experience. One cannot fool the recorder...and thats hard
I think for now on I will be recording myself more just to see better where I am. I use only computers internal microphone so its nothing fancy but it serves its purpose.

Im from Finland, originally upnorth but now I live in Helsinki.

Hei Aleksi!

En tiedä onko täällä muita suomalaisia mutta ruotsalaisia on muutama ja norjalaisia myös. Terve tuloa!

(trying if my finnish is still holding up)

There was a flamenco festival in helsinki a week or so ago. I missed it, but heard from others that there were some really good stuff. Were you there?

Unfortunately I had flue the whole week and I missed the festival acts, but next monday I will go to see Vicente Amigo. He will be here in Helsinki area.

Well, either that or I am overly optimistic :-) I'll give it a shot, and the judges can feel free to disqualify me if my entry is too good (ha!)

I'm half finnish, so I speak finnish with my family, but very seldom write in the language, except notes on what to get from the store etc :-)

I'm from stockholm. There's at least another guy from stockholm as well, and from the gothenburg area there's Duende and the luthier Per Hallgren.

Anyway. It's great to know more northerners that are learning flamenco guitar, especially non-pros. Someday I'd like to gather all the people who are interested and have a free circle type thing, where we can share our stuff and play together, very informally.. and free, of course.

this "free circle type thing" sounds good. I think it would be good idea to share experiences and have sessions.

http://www.flamenco.fi/festivaalit/vicente.html

theres info about the concert, but only in finish. Its not so long way from stockholm to helsinki/espoo to see him play.
well...resently it has been atleast so cold that the snow is staying on the ground, its like real winter :)
