Spalted Birch headstock veneer

Had this idea after dinner. Laid up with a layer of the same carbon fiber cloth I’ve been using, 6oz/yard, cause I knew the end grain had zero Strength, using 5 min epoxy. Sealed the grain with Vary thin CA, then regular, trimmed the flash with the bandsaw, then into my sanding box and the DA, 180 then 220 grit. Just a quick wipe of boiled linseed oil. All done before the sun set.

Thanx Tri,

I don't normally post this kind of stuff on the foro but it just blew my mind when I wiped the linseed on it...

Was thinking about it afterwords and it's the worst wood I could have used for a peg head as far as structural integrity. The underlaying headstck is vary firm Hickory and I did use a layer of CF cloth between it and the spalted end grain.

Question is, will I do it agin on the other necks? Two of the four I'm doing now have Birch necks also, for two Classical guitars.

Can't wait to start carving the two heals that I made up with a slightly less spalted part of the same log.

I think your standard ebony pegs would be fine even against the spalted top aesthetically if that is what you are meaning. But in keeping with theme, how about some pale moon ebony pegs? Would match to the spalted-ness a bit.

Just playing around thinking about using these as a lower rib graft.

Hard to see but there is a strip of black-white-black that mirrors the rosette.

You’re getting fancy on us, lol. Yeah, if the head and rosette are using elements of the spalted woods, it makes sense to tie it all together with the end graft. It might look pretty nice if some spalted wood is incorporated into the tie block inlay, too. Matching and harmonizing the woods is one of my favourite parts about making a guitar.

Ha! I usually keep my toe blocks naked and not sure the spalted end grain will stand up to strings. I could incorporate bone strips on the corners but by then the mirrored spalted charictor would get lost?

Turns out I have two strips left over from the rib joint grafts. To be honest I was thinking I might make a pair of earrings out of it for the Boss ;)

Regardless the Foro will be the first to know.

Pulled one of the Flamenca I've been shellacking into the house after blowing out the dust from inside and pulling the three pieces of blue tape stuck to the heal block inside for dog knows why... Glued on the label and I'll put the strings on her as soon as I'm done double thumbing this iDevice.

I'm always surprised by how much the shellac shrinks but I'm way over it with this two Flamenco, they were ready to shellac a year ago today, they were in the shop after being strung up in the white for a while. April 2nd is my Moose in entanglement anaversary. Yay...! Still, both are a personal best. They go in a shop here in town tomorrow so fingers crossed and I'll be able to get some more supplies. There was some grumbling today from the other half about a C note worth of glue... I had no idea what she was talking about ;)

Major snow dump forcast to start tonight so not sure I'll be anywhere for a couple days but behind a snow blower. I love snow and the snow falls for me every time.
