Tauromagia vid?

Anyone know where these videos are from? They sound exactly like on Tauromagia, was the music on the album the audio pulled from these recordings, or are they different? And more importantly, where can I find these vids - did he do the whole album??

Good stuff!
The first stuff I heard from Manolo Sanlucar was when I bought his series of LP's "Mundos y Formas de la Guitarra Flamenca" when I was in Madrid in the early 80's. (The ones where he looks like Al Pacino on the cover )
Well I can tell you that they sounded nothing like that...some tracks interesting, but most very forgettable and ploddy with a conventional/trad technique and style.

What I'd like to know is...
When did Manolo suddenly become this icon of Solo Guitar?
Where and when did it happen??
He's certainly a very different player now to the stuff recorded on those Albums.

I bet Ricardo will be able to shed some light on this.

cheers,

Ron

Tell me about it! All I've heard of his is Tauromagia, so I can't comment on his earlier/trad stuff (that's on its way for me), but what I've heard I love...one of my favorite flamenco albums, and oh man, just so innovative. As a composer I must admit, I really like him better than Paco, so I'm curious how/why Paco "won out" over him, way back. I hope Ricardo or someone can help, too!

Ramparts,
I picked those LPs up in Madrid when Paco had already released "Fantasia Flamenca" 10 years earlier plus a string of innovative and technically astounding albums.
Manolo and others were just leaving the starting post when Paco had already done the first lap.

No competition.

cheers,

Ron

Ramparts,

These videos are part of a series of documentaries about flamenco guitarists form TVE called
"Tesoros de la guitarra flamenca"

The full documentary about Manolo is about 30 mins. i think.
I have it but i think all parts can be found already on youtube (in parts)

Interesting - did he just play those two pieces or were there more?

RE: Tauromagia vid? (in reply to Adam

Hi everyone,

It looks to me like the audio for both of those videos was taken from the original recordings. It's an unfortunate tendency of Spanish television production. There have been a few programs that nearly always feature live performances, especially of flamenco, but they use "playback" a lot more than I care for. It hardly seems to matter in this case, though, as Manolo seems to be playing everything note for note. I wasn't even sure it wasn't a live recording until the chorus of the cantiñas (alegrías) kicked in.

One of Manolo's first recordings is "Recital Flamenco," which is a real gem. I think it came out just a year or two after Paco's "La Fabulosa Guitarra..." In my opinion--and in accordance with my preferences--, this is his best recording to date. Parts of it were rerecorded for his "Mundo y Formas...," but not at the same level of freshness and intensity. It's really an extraordinary recording. For me, it's one of the top three of all time: Flamenco Puro by Sabicas, La Fabulosa Guitarra... by Paco and Recital Flamenco by Manolo. If you haven't heard it, I highly recommend searching for it high and low.

Yep, playback again. A big fear of TVE is to have good audio. I keep searching for good footage of Manolo playing Tauromagia material. His best album, even by his own opinion. As ron said, mundo y formas was good just guitar solo, but nothing so amazing as Paco say. Tauromagia IS amazing and special IMO. Some of the music between these two periods is...well, bad. He had a couple nice pieces like guajiras and Taranta, or his orchestral arrangements, but nothing so strong and melodic while still "flamenco" like Tauromagia. So for me, yeah he is an amazing composer, but based on this work mainly. His music for dance shows is not really "better" than this, but is very good too.

Anyway, I have a low quality bootleg of the whole Tauromagia, and shared just this piece (below). The quality is bad and I hope to one day find a good quality vid, NOT playback. He tends to make a lot of mistakes in Concerts, which I think was another factor as to why he was not considered as big a concert figure as Paco and some others.

In the 70's after "Caballo negro" became a radio hit like "Entre dos Aguas". He had an MTV style cheesy video to go with it, and then bam he was doing big concert halls.

Wow, really? I would never think that.

I had a similar quality clip of him playing that marvellous slow buleria from "Tauromagia", but I lost it.

I watched a documentary DVD about Pacos Life and in one part Manolo Sanlucar himself said about Paco:

"In Pacos case it happens that, he exemplifies what a Star is. Why? Because those who dont know much about this stuff love him and those who know about it worship him. I mean hes got everything!"

---

To be a "Star" is not only about musical abilities, compositions, etc. i think.
You have to have a mix of all aspects! And Paco simply has it all!

Found these excellent additions to this topic. De capote live, excellent quality, and the Rondeña again, although playback, excellent visually:

I'm generally not a huge Sanlucar fan but Tauromagia is pure magic.

The part played around 2:25 always give me the feeling of someone trying to cross the ocean in a canoe, ending up in a severe storm and just if you think you saw the last of him he somehow managed to survive :-).
To me the album is equally daring/epic as such a journey.

RE: Tauromagia vid? (in reply to Adam

wow - this thread is a gem.

When I need a stylistic break from PDL, Manolo and Riqueni are at the top of my list. I've always found Maletilla very catchy - and I'm currently looking at the Worms transcription. Has anybody worked on this one, or any other Sanlucar pieces from Tauromagia ? According to Enrique Vargas, Taurmagia is the one standout exception to Manolo's many albums because of the deep involvement of his brother - Isidro Muñoz de Sanlúcar, who is a much better writer and composer.

I cannot playce Maletilla in any of the traditional palos - I guess tangos is closest, but it doesn'tquite fit perfectly.

Is there anybody out there that has recorded their rendition of any of the Tauromagia pieces ?

Santiago Lara did a concert of many of the pieces a year or so ago.
Can't find many videos now but here is one.

Cheers

It is tangos. Maeztranza is the weird one, it is a basic waltz or spanish 3/4, but not like the abandolao used in palos. Many patterns fit the song such as buleria or jaleo or fandango, but it is not meant to be any of those. Think of Paco’s Zyryab song as a similar flamenco fusion feel.

1. Nana
2. Tangos
3. Rondeña
4. Vals flamenco
5. Solea por Buleria
6. Bulerias (Rondeña bulerias)
7. Fandango
8. Bulerias en menor (lole y Manuel made this style famous).
9. Bulerias de Cadiz (the fast finale of Alegrias).

People smile and nod to hear a pasodoble taurino played by a good concert band, without knowing the context.

Manolo had trouble performing this in NYC...it is ironic that people feel so comfortable dishing out their high morality after the struggles to survive that their ancestors had to endure which allowed them to do so. Remembering man’s triumph over nature by celebrating the animal that gave its life, as all animals and plants have had to for every other living one today, by having a ritual ceremony, shows high respect for both nature and ancestors. Pretending it did NOT have to happen is actually the disrespectful and ironic if not hypocritical view.
