320 sand paper

Hey guys,

I ordered a bunch of new sand paper.
Needed them quick during lockdown so got them all from the same place. They came and they are Different brands. The 320 seems much to have much more going on on the surface than the 240? To the touch I mean.

Is that normal? I mean the 240 feels fairly smooth to the touch. But the 320 doesn't feel as smooth. Is it possible the two brands don't sit well together.... Ie need to be same brands for grits to be sequential??

I recommend Indasa Rhynolox plus line for your sanding needs. Really very good paper very consistant. I've used it for the past 15 years. It's used al over the auto industry too.

Is one Garnett and the other AL oxide maybe?
I’ve tired cheap sandpaper brands and they seem to be a get what u pay for vs 3M

I think the 320 is def AL oxide.
I'll double check. Thanks Jason.

I guess it's usually best the to go one or other?

Or is one type more suitable for this work?

Also on a sanding note...

Its five years since I made my first guitar and whilst I remember a lot of the actual jobs and how I did them, there's some things I've completely forgotten. More like little ways of doing things and general rules etc.

So sanding....
I can't recall the best methods.
For tops and neck and sides for example.

Is it back and forth?
Against or with the grain?
Or circles?

Or mixture?

Any do's and don't s?

I read that Garnett sandpaper leaves a finer cut vs AL oxide but it doesn’t last as long. I’ve used both and didn’t really notice much of a difference with surface finish, at least with the brands I was using. All I know is that it’s a pain when I make a sanding block and then have to change the paper all the time!
