Very simple etudes and exercises

My brother reached out to me recently and apparently my nephew has picked up guitar. He’s about 15 and did a quarter of guitar1 in high school but that’s the only class they offer and he wants to learn more. They asked if I could do some Skype lessons with him and I said sure. He thinks he likes classical(though I’ll try my best to bring him to the dark side) so I need some really basic classical etude type things. Looks like he can handle basic chording and arpeggiating. I found this etude in a minor, it’s nice but might still be a few months out for that.

Anyone have any other nice sounding simple etudes/exercises?

Giuliani's 120 Right-hand studies are freely available. Some people have even provided some added value by either ranking them by difficulty or adding tab.

Two examples:
1. With tab added: http://www.guitarteacher.com/media/PDF/Giuliani%27s_120_Right_Hand_Studies.pdf

2. Rearranged by difficulty (in the author's view): http://www.classicalguitar.org/freemusic/exercises/Giuliani120.pdf

These are patterns to get the right hand going. Not much in terms of musical value as they follow the same I - V degrees sequence, but that can be varied.

For a well thought-out technical progression which is also very musical, I'd recommend Juilo Sagreras's "Lecciones para Guitarra". The Delcamp forum/website actually had a bunch of volunteers engrave it so there is a complete set online available for free, here: https://www.guitarraclasicadelcamp.com/partituras/juliosalvadorsagreras.html

This is tons of great stuff thanks Kit and Ramz!
I have to learn everything he learns so hopefully he doesn’t get too good too quick.

Get Aaron Shearer's book number one and teach him with that.
Or Frederick Noad's book. The Parkening beginner book is ok too.

I also have a PDF method from Phillip Hemmo who teaches at Arizona State I can send it to you and you could ask him questions about how to proceed. He's a great guy and very interested in guitar pedagogy.

I'll send it over this weekend. I feel I've vented enough spleen on the gentleman luthiers for a few days.

Hey I took a "masterclass" from Phil Hemmo when I was in college! He convinced me to stop using the drop D so much when playing the first Bach Prelude from the 1st Cello suite.

The best simple stuff I've seen is Stanley Yates' repertoire level 1 book. Very melodic and pleasant.

Try Juan Antonio Muro's Basic Pieces.

They are for children, but they are very good.

Frederick Noad Solo Guitar Playing.

In spite of the title, many of the early exercises are in two parts so you can play with him.
