Nina de los Peines is my favorite cantaora, not only of the old-timers, but of all time. She is just great.

Pastora illustrates and exemplifies this quotation from Rafael Marin, the author of the early flamenco method:

José Manuel Gamboa writes, in "Una Historia del Flamenco"

Especially first two tracks here, she does a nice chacon copy:

Interesting to note that Camaron copied her track 7 taranta, but not her cartagenera track 2 (he seems to have gone along with Valderrama s changes to the form, los picaros tartaneros being the same song style).

Pastora so dominated flamenco that she earned the nickname Herod--the"killer" of the niños--as she would perform in a town where the locals would bring forth their aspiring young singers in a "sing-off", and Pastora would "slay" them one by one. Her voice is so penetrating, chilling, wild that it gives me chills when I hear her.
