I met Jose de Pura a few weeks ago when I was in Seville attending class at Taller Flamenco. Jose was a great guy. In fact he came to my Airbnb apartment to give me lessons on Diego’s Bulerias falsetas everyday. At he end of the last lesson, he took us to LaCarboneria to watch him play. He was very impressed with the fact that I knew some about Diego del Gastor, and said that if he had asked hundreds of Sevillians, probably none would know who Diego del Gastor was, and here a fellow from a faraway land asking to learn Diego’s music.

Wow, high praise from Morante.
Definitely really enjoyed that, I've been on a solea kick lately too so great timing.

He sounds like a very cool guy too. Every famous flamenco I've ever met has always been very cool, something about el arte maybe.

I have known José for a long time since he played in the Peña. However I had been friends for even longer with Silverio Heredia, a great singer from Chiclana, whom I got to know in the recording of Toma Castaña.

I was chatting with Silverio one night at an open air festival of the Peña, when I saw Joselito approach. I said "Mira, Silverio, this is a great tocaor." Silverio laughed and said "Lo sé, es mi sobrino!"

I asked Jose if he was related to Diego, through Google translator he said Paco del Gastor, the oldest nephew of Diego del Gastor, considered him as family and had taught him play the guitar. One cool thing about Jose was that he was on time every day for my lesson, not a minute late.
