New Book: "Flamenco Music: Hist...

Estimated (sic) flamencologists,

I am pleased to announce the publication of my book, “Flamenco Music: History, Forms, Culture” (written under my pseudonym, Peter Manuel; my real name is of course Steelhead). Much of the contents will be familiar to the erudite members of this forum, though I have my own way of presenting and interpreting things (and I’m sure anyone here who reads it will find things to object to). Though I try to write in a readable rather than pedantic style, the book aims to be thorough and rigorously scholarly rather than breezy and chatty, and there are plenty of transcriptions and close analyses of forms.

Though not a regular contributor to this forum, I do follow it, and over the years I have learned much from the posts of Ricardo and the other extremely knowledgeable contributors. (In surveying the literature and discourse on flamenco, I mention this forum as a site for much valuable and learned discussion.

I notice that every year or two some newbie on this forum asks if there is any good survey book on flamenco, and the answers are basically along the lines of, “well, not really.” Hopefully my book can address this lacuna satisfactorily.
Paper copy is, I believe, $35, minus 30% using discount code (= ca. $24.50).

thanks for the heads up, in time for christmas!

thanks for the promo code, although unfortunately I won't be able to take advantage of it not being in the USA (even with discount it will be subject to import duty and admin charges in UK). You might post a link for those who are (in US) though?

i did a quick search for it and it's listed at presto music in the UK

Yeah, now that Bezos killed UK-based bookdepository... which would have been your best option.

My being in Canada, amazon.ca is cheapest all included, even without discount.

I don't suppose I would have been able to use the promo code at booksuppository.... and I am trying to avoid using amazon (or other companies they own) on ethical grounds.

heh depository, they were the good guys... no shipping charges worldwide and very reasonable prices, then Bezos bought them out and now a few years later quietly closed them (I just found out today that they closed in the spring), But no, you wouldn't have, I just imagine it would have been cheaper anyway. I also can't use the promo code for amazon.ca, but at least no shipping or customs changes, so even with canadian tax it is cheaper for me than the discounted $24.50 USD price +shipping from UIP.

Congratulations, Steelhead, from one old (ex) ethnomusicologist to another, with mutual interests in flamenco and Cuban popular music. I look forward to reading it.

No shipping (order over $35 CDN), no customs/handing charges. Just the shipping from UIP/US was adding ~$13-14 USD for me. Whereas I got the book from within Canada for ~$34.50 USD-equivalent, all included. The bulk price must be quite a bit lower.

BTW, apparently ~70% of the price of guitar string sets in stores is the markup over the price music stores pay the manufacturer. They pay $6 and sell them for $20, for example. The Aquila strings owner shared this on delcamp some time ago.

I meant it makes me wonder how amazon sell so cheap, undercutting all other booksellers...

I don't know about strings specifically, but I know most stuff bought new in shops is subject to 50% mark-up, or was when I helped a friend out in her shop 20+ years ago and we went to the wholesaler and I was amazed that the trade prices there were half what she was selling for.

Blackwells delivered it to Hackney. I don’t know how they feel about Ealing.

Thanks for the info, I've just ordered on Blackwells. I had presumed yours was an academia insider pre-release copy.

They don't dig Ealing, the Waterstones presence frightens them off.

I was looking on A****n. Out of stock. Blackwells pre-order, for paperback, silly price for the hardback everywhere.

Just ordered from Waterstones.

Islington is Waterstones country. On this side of the borough border, Blackwells roams free.

I pre-ordered it, expecting to wait for weeks but then they delivered it straight away. Odd.
