Encarnacion Marin Sallago passed away last week. Born in 1919, she had an extraordinary career, singing in Las Brujas, Torrebermeja, Los Canasteros etc. To mark her 80 birthday, a group of aficionados made an anthology of her grabaciones. A group of aficionados de Cádiz went to a Peña in Sanlúcar to celebrate it. Carmen de la Jara sang, then sang Encarna, still in wonderful voice: when she sang por bulerías, she called for a table to be placed by her side so that she could mark compás. Her anthología includes Serranas, Peteneras, Marianas, Siguiriyas, Mirabrás. Who today, man or woman, sings and sings well such a variety? The only singer I ever accompanied por Marianas was José Millán, another lost encycylopedia. Just had lunch, listening to her fantastic voice. Now we are left with anodyne cantantes, such as Estrella Morente or Niña Pastori. Flamenco está en apuros. Thanks to Estela for introducing me to Encarna so many years ago. Morante
