Air traveling with guitar policy!

Hi there!

I stumbled on an article that could be some use for all of us!
Next time you fly, print it out and show the stewardess, together with the biggest smile you have, she cannot resist you to tace your beloved instrument with you on the plane!

Can some of you who control the english language better than me clarify something for me?

Does this mean, i may only take the guitar?
or,
I can take the guitar plus a smalll bag?

You have got to take Guitars in the Hold, along with your Suitcase. You cannot take onboard with you. They will not fit in the overhead luggage compartments above the seats

uh, uh... I have taken and brought back guitars from Spain - they will fit the overhead lockers on EasyJet and RyanAir planes. It depends on whether you smile at check-in and the number of passengers on the flight. Spain seems friendlier toward outbound guitars.

In all our travels and tours we have never put a guitar in the hold. I think harold would rather go in the hold and let the guitar have his seat

This relates to screening hand luggage in the USA, not airline policy - so they may still ask you to check it at check-in or the gate.

Peter,

This means that you can take on three seperate items. A musical instrument, a 'carry-on' which I guess means a bag and one personal item.

It's not clear if a guitar in a case is larger that the dimension limit?

I tried recently to check in my guitar (it was in an armour plated case) and they insisted it went on board with me. Easyjet Madrid to Gatwick. It fitted very easily overhead on an A319. But I do have a bone to pick with the regulations. It says

"the owner may be asked to play the instrument."

In my case that would amount to an act of terrorism

I wonder if that is due to an African musician whose name escapes me right now. Anyway he was organising a massive immigration scam sending musicians 'on tour'. They got caught when one of the musicians was asked to play and they discovered the people were not actually musicians at all.

Don't forget Simon's advice and smile. You can't be too careful. Check your airline carefully. Here is a small selection of the diverse info on offer from the airlines. Note the precision statement and detail offered by my national carrier

British Airways - Notify office before hand for large musical instruments
Air France - Prior notice essential
Easyjet - A cello requires a pre-paid seat. Other musical instruments will only be permitted to be carried in the cabin and placed into the overhead locker if space is available and strictly subject to the Captain's discretion. The instrument including its carry case must not exceed the dimensions 30 x 117 x 38cms.
Ryanair - Should you wish to check-in a musical instrument, such items will only be accepted on a ‘limited release’ (i.e. entirely ‘at your own risk’ for damage or delay) basis. You may therefore wish to ensure that you have suitable private insurance cover in force for such items.
Delta - Small instruments such as violins will be accepted as your free carry-on baggage item. However, the instrument must be within the limitations of Delta's baggage allowance and carry-on baggage size limits.
