fingers and frets

hi,

one piece of info my teacher gave me very early on was the fingers m and a should never find themselves in frets that aren't adjacent....
ie. m cant be in fret 3 and a in fret 5.

but on trying to learn the tremolo from reflejo de luna Paco clearly breaks this rule...if only for a split second.

this is the bit i mean

any thoughts on this?

Stu, i see what you mean, but i don't think you're right...it's normal tremolo and he's playing the higher C note on the G string with his pulgar...he hammers on the lower C on the A string to prepare for the next bass note but it's definitely not the case of him playing the octave and then picking the iami tremolo - that would be difficult even for Paco at this speed, and wouldn't make much sense musically either...

you mean fingers m and a on the left hand (aka fingers 2 and 3)?

i wondered what other people thought about this too, especially as there is an exercise on paso a paso 3 for developing stretch between all fingers including 2 and 3.

it does seem harder to stretch between these fingers, and there are few examples of music needing this stretch. could be it's right and there is more potential for damage - we need to see the medical journal that proves it!

Hi all, I was interested to see what other people thought about this because I didn't think that was a rule in particular, if the music demands it. And my teacher has also given me a left hand exercise to improve stretch between 2 and 3! It certainly is difficult though and not something I would choose to do if I could find another way of fingering.

agreed, infact I've never come across one until this.

As far as I was aware the a and m (or 2 and 3) on whichever hands are joined by the same tendon which would make that strecth extremely hard if not ill advised.

Tony??? because thats who told me not to do that stretch. but maybe its not him.

No I haven't been learning with Tony for quite a while now. But isn't it strange when different teachers tell you different "rules"? I guess partly you just have to find your own way. I had one class with a very respected teacher and player who said it was a bad habit to rest your thumb on the 6th string - almost fell off my chair!
