Cantinas

I had a question about the Cantinas group of palos. I know that Alegrias and Romeras are included here. Romeras is typically played in the key of E major and Alegrias normally in A. I am not too sure about Caracoles and Mirabras. Are these played in C major or some other key? Also, what is the difference between a Solea and a Cana? Lastly, what is a Polo? Thnx everyone.

Thnx for the reply Romerito.Yeah, I believe PDL's Alegrias in D is "Mi Inspiracion". I saw PDL back in the mid 90's at Avery Fisher Hall with his Sextet and he did an Alegrias in C which was one of the most memorable performances I've seen. After watching that, I said to myself I have to learn flamenco soon.

There is a thread here somewhere (you can use the search engine) called "Palos" with explanations about some of this stuff. I put up some and Ricardo did a great job on some other info - and he knows a hell of a lot more about this topic than I do.

There are certain figures that were part of the aire and were not to be mixed, but because it is an oral tradition and change is inevitable, well...things got mixed to the point that now some people do not differentiate between the two.

See, that was very well put. I don't know if it's due to the oral tradition. I think it's more due to the globalization of Flamenco. Part of my whole point of the arguement of Modern VS. Traditional is that a lot of stuff is getting lost. Signature tags and such that if lost, just leave each palo watered down and indistictive. You captured the point exactly.

You are right about Romeras in E, Alegrias in A and Caracoles in C.

The following is with respect to accompanying the cante - guitar solos have different conventions (and innovation seems to be more fluid - vocal range constraints are not a factor):

In Cadiz, alegrias are almost always played in C; this is true in the early recordings of Aurelio (from the 20s, I think), through the classic recordings of Pericon, Manolo Vargas, etc., and is true today. I've heard Alegrias in A on some older recordings (e.g.Nin~o Gloria, La Nin~a de los Peines; neither from Cadiz).

I believe that alegrias in E became popular with the rise of tablaos, as it provides certain possibilities for dance accompaniment - a bigger sound, as all strings are played (unlike A) and an easy switch to minor for the silencio (unlike C).
