Ailsa's flamenco week

Well I just can't compete with the likes of Pimientito, but I'm doing my bit in the own little way

Here's what I've seen this week:

Paco Pena's new show Flamenco sin Fronteras
I hadn't been planning to go to this but Dave was keen so I booked tickets - I actually really enjoyed it. The focus was the ida y vuelta songs, and they had some south American musicians playing traditional music too. The way it was arranged really pointed up the influences, the similarities and differences. It wasn't really a guitar show, it was a show about the music. Anyway, recommended if it's coming your way and you like ida y vuelta.

Espana on Fire
A monthly flamenco event at Ronnie Scott's bar - show followed by a jam session. In some ways this is more my thing. I like my flamenco up close and personal

Guitarist, singer, percussion and dancing the wonderful Jorge Muelas. I just love his style. He does some very contained marcaje which explodes into a frenzy of energy! Fantastic.

Played for a new dance class
OK not so exciting, but I really enjoyed it. Tangos, Sevillanas and Alegrias paseo and escobilla. I kept it reeeeeeeeeally simple and straight, no falsetas at all, just clean and clear compas. And once you've played straight compas for a while it get's much better, so it was really good practice!

what a week!

i'm going to see this show this month:

then i'm going to see paco pena on october 4, that's if there's still tickets left. i hope he'll be playing more traditional flamenco stuff.

my girlfriend signed up for a dance class at school and her homework is to go see dance shows so now we don't have to feel guilty about spending money to go see shows!

Well it's a pretty busy gig month for me (don't get to see any shows though

)

Within 3 weeks I've got:

a wedding
2 cafe shows
Family & Children Services benefit
and a fat cat dinner

Unfortunately no venues nearby here.

A couple of weeks ago I watched a film on TV

a bit spaced out for my liking (it's sort of a documentary but just seems to juxtapose impressions from all over the world wherever there's an ingrained flamenco scene: Spain, Japan, India, Germany, Egypt ... with scenes ranging from "jondo" to grotesque )
For those of you with access to the German TV-channel ZDFdokukanal it's going to be emitted again on Thu Oct 1, 22:15. You needn't speak German .

Apart from that, I just ordered "Mujerez" today
